The IRS's VITA program prepares and e-files your federal and state tax returns completely free if you earn around $69,000 or less, have a disability, or speak limited English — and its TCE sibling program specializes in taxpayers 60 and up. IRS-certified volunteers handle the whole return, every return gets a quality review before filing, and volunteers are trained to catch credits like the EITC that paid preparers charge hundreds to find. Sites run roughly late January through the April deadline.
