Why Won't My Black Friday Coupon Code Apply at Checkout?

Fix a rejected Black Friday code by checking item match, minimums, limits, and entry steps.

Your Black Friday coupon code usually fails because the item does not match the offer or the cart misses a quantity, minimum, or single-order rule. A promo code is a short string you enter at checkout to lower the price of eligible merchandise. Expired codes also fail.

Check the dates, the eligible items, and the entry steps before you try another code.

Did the code expire or miss the item?

Target says its online checkout rejects expired promo codes and codes where the cart item does not match the coupon's brand, size, quantity, color or flavor, as explained in Target's help on price adjustments and promotions. A close match is not enough when the terms name a scent, flavor, size, or multipack count. Walmart follows the same match rule for paper manufacturer coupons.

It accepts only one such coupon per item and denies mismatched coupons when the purchase does not match the description.

Did your order meet the minimum?

Many Black Friday offers require a minimum merchandise total. Amazon says taxes, shipping, handling, gift-wrap and gift charges do not count toward that minimum, according to Amazon's promotional terms and conditions. A $50 cart can still fall short when $8 of that total is tax and shipping.

Codes also reduce only eligible merchandise. Target says promotion codes do not apply to sales tax or gift cards and may not apply to some shipping and handling fees.

Did you enter the code in the right place?

Add the eligible items first, then enter the code in the promo field and submit it. Target says shoppers must add eligible items, enter each promo code under Potential savings, and select Apply or Redeem.

  • Confirm the spelling, numbers, and dashes.
  • Confirm you selected Apply or Redeem after typing.
  • Confirm the discount appears before payment.
  • Remove an old code if only one code is allowed.

Can you use two Black Friday codes together?

Often no. Amazon limits promotions to one code per customer and account and applies the code only to items in a single order shipped at the same speed to one address. Splitting items across addresses or speeds can break the offer.

Read the linked offer terms before assuming a store code stacks with a brand coupon. The Federal Trade Commission advises small businesses that ads touting a price or discount must clearly disclose material qualifications and restrictions, as explained in the FTC guide for small business advertising. Look for one-per-order, one-per-account, excluded brands, and excluded gift cards.
