Why Some Holiday Gift Card Promotions Have Spending Minimums

See how $25 and $250 minimums unlock bonuses, when bonus cards work, and how to judge if the spend fits you.

A spending minimum is the purchase total you must reach to earn a bonus card. Stores set it to lift average order value and lock in cash early, because guests often spend past the card balance. Holiday 2026 thresholds vary widely.

Bakers Square starts at $25, while Kalahari Resorts tiers start at $250.

How minimums lift each sale

Shoppers adjust to hit the next tier. A $22 plan becomes a $25 purchase when $25 unlocks extra value. Shopify links that lift to higher average order value in its merchant guide on gift cards for retail.

Payment arrives weeks before redemption. Guests then often pay the gap when the meal costs more than the card. That gap turns a bonus into a larger visit.

What a flat $25 threshold means

Bakers Square gives a $5 bonus reward for every $25 in gift cards bought Nov. 1-Dec. 31, 2026, with the total reachable by combining denominations.

The bonus activates Jan. 1, 2027 and redeems in-store only Jan. 2-Mar.

31, 2027, once per table or visit. It excludes gift cards, coupons, and to-go pies, according to Bakers Square in Bakers Square promo terms. That structure suits a planned family dinner.

A $50 gift purchase yields two bonuses for later visits. A single $20 gift earns nothing extra.

How percentage tiers scale up

Kalahari Resorts gives a 10% bonus for $250-$999 in gift cards and 20% for $1,000 or more. The bonus is auto-applied and placed on a separate card through Dec. 16, 2026.

Kalahari describes the tiers on Kalahari sale page. The math favors large, planned group trips. A $300 purchase yields about $30 in bonus value.

A $1,000 purchase yields about $200, but ties up far more cash.

Why bonus cards carry tighter windows

Purchased gift-card funds have a federal floor. They cannot expire for at least five years. Inactivity fees apply only after one year of nonuse with disclosure, notes the Federal Trade Commission in Federal Trade Commission holiday tips.

Bonus cards do not share that long window. Bakers Square bonuses work for about three months in early 2027 and only in-store. Treat the two balances as separate cards with separate rules.

How to judge a minimum before you buy

Match the threshold to spending you already planned. Do not stretch for a tier that changes your budget. If you planned $250 at Kalahari Resorts anyway, the separate bonus card is useful.

If not, skip the tier and keep the cash.

  • Total your planned gifts before you shop.
  • Check bonus start and end dates for redemption.
  • Check in-store limits and exclusions for bonus use.
  • Buy the lower tier if the next tier adds unplanned spend.
