Why Some Gift Cards Can't Be Used Online

See why store and Visa gift cards fail online and what to check before you try checkout again.

Some gift cards cannot be used online because they are locked to one brand, one country, or in-store use. Others decline when the order total tops the balance or the checkout blocks that type of purchase. A closed-loop card is prepayment usable only at the issuing brand.

An open-loop card carries a network logo like Visa and works anywhere that network is accepted.

Is your card locked to one brand or country?

A store card spends only at that brand's participating locations. According to Starbucks, a Starbucks Card is prepayment for goods at participating Starbucks stores, while some airport, grocery, bookstore, and Guam locations may refuse it Starbucks gift card terms. Region can block an online order in the same way.

According to Amazon Customer Service, Amazon gift cards must be redeemed on www.amazon.com or affiliated sites, so a U.S. card cannot pay on Amazon country sites or unrelated merchants Amazon gift card terms. Check the back of the card and the redemption page before checkout.

If the brand, site, or country does not match, the card will not process.

Does the site block what you are buying?

Some checkouts accept a gift card for most items but refuse certain categories. Amazon Customer Service states that Amazon gift cards cannot be used to buy other gift cards or specified ineligible goods and services, and eligible uses can change at Amazon's discretion. That means a balance can show as valid yet still fail on one product.

Read the product page and the gift-card terms for exclusions. Switch to an eligible item or another payment method when the category is blocked.

Is activation, balance, or card entry the problem?

Physical Visa and Mastercard gift cards must be activated before use, while virtual or digital cards are for online or phone use only. The PerfectGift Help Center notes that using the wrong channel causes a decline. Online checkout also needs the full card details.

According to Visa, open-loop Visa gift cards can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, including online, only up to the loaded amount, and checkout requires entering the 16-digit number, expiration date, and CVV Visa gift card balance guide. Balance limits cause many failures. Visa notes its gift cards are not reloadable, so an online total above the remaining balance fails unless the buyer reduces the order or combines payment methods.

Restaurants, gas stations, and hotels add another wrinkle because they place pre-authorization holds above the sale amount, such as meal plus 20% for tips, and the PerfectGift Help Center notes the charge declines when sale plus hold exceeds the balance.

What can you do at checkout?

If the purchase exceeds the balance, the transaction is generally declined. The PerfectGift Help Center notes buyers must ask the merchant to charge only the available amount and pay the rest separately, but many websites do not support split payments. Use these checks before you retry: Old plastic can also fail even when funds remain.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes federal rules require gift-card funds to remain usable for at least five years and bar inactivity or service fees until after 12 months without activity, but expired plastic or fee-reduced balances still cause online declines. Request a replacement card when the plastic has expired.

  • Confirm activation for plastic cards and use digital cards only online or by phone.
  • Enter the 16-digit number, expiration date, CVV, and registered billing ZIP exactly.
  • Lower the order total below the remaining balance or add a second payment method when the site allows it.
  • Avoid travel, fuel, and tipped-food orders that add holds larger than the balance.
