Why Does Amazon Still Ask for a Credit Card When You Have a Gift Card Balance?

A card request may reflect a trial, Amazon Pay, Business settings, or an order total that exceeds your available gift-card balance.
Amazon does not document a universal rule requiring a credit card for an ordinary Amazon.com retail order that your gift-card balance fully covers. A card prompt usually points to the type of checkout, a trial, a subscription, a business-payment setting, or an amount that exceeds the balance. An Amazon gift-card balance is money already applied to your Amazon account.
It can pay for eligible purchases, but it does not replace every payment method Amazon may require in every checkout flow.

A retail order may not need a card
Amazon's consumer help information allows customers to remove cards from their Amazon wallet. It does not say that a standard Amazon.com order fully covered by gift-card balance must always have a card on file. Amazon's payment-method help page So, if you are buying an eligible item on Amazon.com and your balance covers the full order, the card request is not explained by a blanket retail-order rule.

Free trials need a backup card
Amazon says eligible U.S. customers may use gift-card balance for Prime memberships and Prime Video add-on subscriptions when that choice appears during sign-up. That option does not extend to a free trial paid only with gift cards.
For an eligible Prime or Prime Video add-on free trial, Amazon requires a credit or debit card as a backup payment method. Customers using only gift cards cannot receive that free trial. Amazon's Prime and Prime Video subscription guidance If you do not want to add a card, look for the paid membership option that lets you select your gift-card balance, if it appears.
A free-trial screen and a paid sign-up screen can have different payment requirements.
Subscriptions can outlast today's balance
A gift-card balance used for Prime or a Prime Video add-on may be enough for the current billing period, yet later charges still need available funds. Amazon warns that the same balance can also be spent on other Amazon.com purchases. Before choosing gift-card-funded subscription billing, consider whether you want to reserve that balance.

Amazon Pay is a separate checkout
Amazon Pay is the payment service used on participating third-party merchant websites. An Amazon.com gift-card balance cannot be used through Amazon Pay, which accepts credit and debit cards instead. Amazon Pay's gift-card help page That distinction matters when a checkout page shows Amazon branding but is not an Amazon.com retail order.
In that situation, adding a card is expected because the gift-card balance is not an available payment option. Amazon Pay also describes a backup-payment setting that can charge an eligible backup method when a payment problem occurs. Amazon Pay's backup-payment explanation
Business accounts have different limits
Amazon Business handles gift cards through Individual Payment Methods. A buyer using a shared pay group cannot see gift cards as a payment option, even when the account has a balance. If the business order costs more than the available gift-card balance, Amazon Business requires another individual payment method for the rest.
Amazon Business gift-card payment guidance Before entering card details, check these points:
- Is this an Amazon.com retail checkout, Amazon Pay, or Amazon Business?
- Is the screen offering a free trial?
- Does your gift-card balance cover the complete order?
- Are you using a shared pay group instead of an individual payment method?
