What Happens If You Miss a Sweepstakes Deadline?

Learn the cost of a missed entry or claim window and the steps that keep your next prize eligible.

Missing a sweepstakes deadline means you lose your chance. An entry sent after the entry period does not qualify, and a prize not claimed in time is forfeited. A sweepstakes deadline is a cutoff date for action.

The entry deadline closes the chance to enter. The claim deadline closes the chance to collect a prize after you are notified.

Which deadline did you miss?

Entry and claim deadlines work differently. An entry deadline sets the days when entries count. A claim deadline sets the days when a selected winner can accept the prize.

According to WestenGW's official rules, its Camaro/GMC sweepstakes ran Oct. 30-Nov. 30, 2026, and entries outside that Promotion Period do not qualify, as shown in WestenGW's promotion period details.

That date range decides eligibility. A late entry is not held for the next drawing. Claim windows work the same way on a shorter or longer clock.

California Lottery states that Powerball prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the draw, with only the jackpot extended to one year, after which the ticket is void, as shown in California Lottery's Powerball claim rules. After the clock ends, the prize is gone.

What happens to the prize?

A missed entry simply does not enter. It gives no chance to win and no place on a winner list. You can enter the next eligible promotion during its stated dates.

A missed claim means forfeiture. The sponsor has no prize to hold for you after the stated period. Government lotteries use the same rule when a ticket goes void after its claim period.

The result is final for that entry or drawing. Check dates before you enter and check messages often after you enter.

How will a sponsor reach you?

You must use contact details you can still check. WestenGW's official rules state that it contacts potential winners only through the phone number or email supplied on the entry form, as described in how WestenGW contacts winners. A message sent elsewhere is not part of the award process.

A legitimate award notice will not ask for payment to release a prize. The same rules state the sponsor never demands credit-card, bank, or other payment to award a prize.

  • Notice arrives by the phone or email from your entry form.
  • Award requires no card number, bank transfer, or fee.
  • A demand for payment points to someone else, not the sponsor.

Do claimed prizes count as income?

Yes. A prize you collect on time can still create a tax form. The IRS explains that payers file Form 1099-MISC for prizes and awards of $600 or more paid during the year, as described in IRS guidance on Form 1099-MISC.

That threshold applies to many large sweepstakes prizes. Keep the award notice, prize value letter, and tax form together. The chance to win is not a guaranteed benefit, and "no purchase necessary" does not mean "free" when taxes apply.
