What Happens If You Miss a Store's Return Deadline?

Learn what late returns cost, when in-store options remain, and how posted policies affect refunds.
If you miss a store's return deadline, the retailer can deny your refund or exchange. A return deadline is the last date a store will take an item back for money or credit. That denial can mean keeping an item you cannot use.
The details below show how windows differ, what late shipment risks, and what options may remain.

How long do standard windows last?
Target says most unopened items in new condition qualify within 90 days for refund or exchange, while most Target Plus partner items have only 30 days, according to Target's current help page. Shorter limits apply to electronics and other restricted categories. Amazon limits most returns to within 30 days of delivery in original or unused condition for refund or replacement, with longer 90-day exceptions for items such as mattresses and most nonperishable baby products, according to Amazon's 2026 returns policy.
Target also sets shorter periods for electronics, Apple and Beats products, mobile phones, and opened media.
What happens if you ship after approval expires?
Late shipment can leave you with neither the item nor payment. Samsung requires shipment within 15 days after approval with no extensions, according to Samsung's return-period help article. Samsung says late packages may be refused, fail inspection, lose the refund, and be discarded rather than returned.
Do not mail a return after the ship-by date unless the retailer tells you in writing to do so.
Can an expired online request still be returned?
An expired online return request does not always end eligibility. BJ's closes the online request after 30 days without shipment and voids the label, according to BJ's current help page. BJ's says most items remain returnable in-club for up to one year with order information.
Bring the order confirmation, packing slip, or membership purchase record to the service desk.
What if the policy was not clearly posted?
California requires retailers that will not give a full refund, credit, or equal exchange within seven days with receipt to post that policy clearly. The California Attorney General says posting must appear at registers, entrances, on tags, or order forms. A missing or hidden notice matters if a store refuses a timely return with receipt.
Keep your receipt and a photo of the posted policy until the refund posts.
