See which DC promotions remain open, what trip prizes may exclude, and how to enter without paying a claim fee.
No current, verified Washington, DC trip sweepstakes emerged from the reviewed destination sources. A sweepstakes is a free game of chance, and the FTC says a purchase cannot be required to enter or improve your odds. The only verified open promotion is a local concert-ticket sweepstakes, not a trip package.
Recent DC travel giveaways provide useful examples, but their entry periods have ended.
What can you enter now?
Destination DC's indexed trip promotion is not current. Its published sweepstakes rules show that entries closed on December 3, 2021. PNC and Wolf Trap do have an active no-purchase promotion running from May 4 through September 1, 2026.
It uses separate concert-ticket drawings, with odds based on the number of eligible entries received. However, the Wolf Trap rules list tickets, parking or lounge access, and a prize pack. They do not include airfare, lodging, or ground transportation, so this is a local-experience giveaway rather than a Washington, DC travel sweepstakes.
Which recent DC giveaways have expired?
The National Geographic Society's museum promotion ended July 5, 2026. It was restricted to residents of DC, Virginia, and Maryland who were at least 18 and submitted a public Instagram or TikTok post. The National Cherry Blossom Festival offered a genuine DC trip with airfare reimbursement, two hotel nights, parade tickets, and a stated value of $5,390.
However, the Festival's rules show that entries closed June 30, 2026. Expired promotions can help you recognize realistic prize descriptions, but their old entry forms are not valid opportunities. Always locate the current promotion period before submitting personal information.
What should you verify before entering?
Read the sponsor's own rules instead of relying only on an advertisement or social post. The rules should identify: Stop if the dates have passed or the listed entry method differs from the page you received. A "no purchase necessary" statement does not override residence, age, social-media, or submission requirements.
- The sponsor and promotion dates
- Eligible locations and minimum age
- The free entry method and entry limit
- Exactly what the prize covers
- Exclusions and winner obligations
What could a travel prize leave unpaid?
A stated prize value is not the same as spending money. The Cherry Blossom Festival prize excluded meals, tips, taxes, and other expenses, while requiring travel on fixed dates in April 2027. Check whether airfare is purchased directly or reimbursed after travel.
Also review hotel occupancy, transportation, guest eligibility, release forms, taxes, and what happens if the winner cannot travel on the required dates. These details determine whether a prize fits your budget and schedule. A valuable package may still require the winner to pay significant personal costs.
How can you avoid prize-payment traps?
The D.C. Office of the Attorney General warns consumers not to pay fees, taxes, shipping, insurance, or processing charges to claim a prize. Do not provide bank-account details, and do not trust claims that a government agency oversees the sweepstakes or needs payment.
Before responding to a winner notice, compare it with the notification process in the sponsor's rules. If someone demands money or banking information, end contact and report the incident to the FTC.
