How to Spot Real Giveaways vs. Scams
According to the Federal Trade Commission, legitimate sweepstakes and giveaways must permit free entry by law. Anyone charging an entry fee, requesting upfront payment, or asking for credit card, Social Security, or bank account information is running a scam. This protection applies to every giveaway online or in-person.
Before entering, verify the account by checking for a blue verification checkmark, reviewing the account creation date (scam accounts are typically days or weeks old), and searching for published contest rules and prior winner announcements. These steps take two minutes and eliminate most fraud. Watch for red flags: grammatical errors in contest messages, requests for passwords or PINs, implausibly generous prizes, and immediate-action pressure via text or direct message.
Legitimate sweepstakes provide reasonable response windows of 24–72 hours as stated in official rules, while artificial urgency—pressure to act within hours—is a common scammer tactic.
If You Receive a Winning Notification
Close the message, open a fresh browser tab, visit the official corporate website of the supposed sponsor, and call their consumer relations department directly to verify your name appears on the official winner list. Do not use phone numbers or links from the message itself. Never provide Social Security numbers, bank account details, passwords, or credit card information based on an email or text alone.
All contact should go through the sponsor's official website channels, never through links or numbers in the winning notification.
