How to tell a safe prize message from a scam
A legitimate prize entry is free. The Federal Trade Commission warns that demands for fees, taxes, or financial information signal a prize scam in its October 2026 sweepstakes alert.
- Do not pay a fee to claim a grocery prize.
- Do not provide bank account, wire transfer, gift card, or payment app details.
- Do not trust a message only because it uses a known brand name or logo.
- Stop contact and report the message through ReportFraud.ftc.gov if payment is demanded.
