Thanksgiving Grocery Price Matching: How It Actually Works

See what Target, Walmart, and ALDI will adjust for Thanksgiving and what to bring to the register.

Thanksgiving grocery price matching usually means a store adjusts to its own current lower price, not to a rival's turkey ad. Target, Walmart and ALDI each set narrow limits that control holiday adjustments. Price matching here means a same-item correction at checkout or customer service.

Knowing each limit helps you choose where to buy and what proof to bring.

What Will Target Adjust?

According to Target, stores now match only a lower Target price within 14 days of purchase, as described in the Target Price Match help page. It ended competitor matching in July 2025, so Amazon or Walmart ads no longer qualify. For the holidays, Target extends the window for its own price drops.

Purchases made Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, 2026 can be adjusted if Target lowers the price by Dec.

24, with proof of purchase required. At the register, bring proof that shows the current Target price. Target notes screenshots are rejected and clearance, gift-card promotions, and other Target stores are excluded.

  • Show the item on Target.com, the Target app, or a local Target ad
  • Ask at checkout or Guest Services with your receipt
  • Confirm the item is identical and in stock at that Target price

What Will Walmart Match?

Walmart explains in Walmart's AskWalmart price-match answer that U.S. stores match only the identical item advertised on Walmart.com. Competitor prices and Walmart Marketplace prices do not qualify, and the on-duty store manager makes the final decision.

That rule covers packaged groceries and holiday staples the same way. Bring the Walmart.com listing for the exact size and brand, since a close substitute or marketplace seller will not trigger an adjustment.

Why Won't ALDI Match a Lower Ad?

ALDI states in its ALDI Pricing FAQs that it does not match prices because it negotiates low prices directly. Shoppers cannot bring a Walmart, Publix, or Kroger ad for an adjustment. The practical effect is simple: compare cart totals instead of asking for a match.

If ALDI's turkey and sides total less than another store's ad price, you save by buying there outright.

How Do Holiday Bundles Fit In?

Walmart Corporate said its 2025 Thanksgiving basket fed 10 people for under $40 with more than 20 items, including Butterball turkey at $0.97 per pound from Oct. 20 through Dec. 26, 2025 online and in-store.

ALDI Newsroom said its 2025 bundle also fed 10 for $40, with turkey plus ingredients for nine sides from Oct. 15 through Dec. 24, 2025.

Those were fixed-price bundles, not price-match offers. The American Farm Bureau Federation's 40th annual survey priced a classic 10-person dinner at $55.18, as reported in the Iowa Farm Bureau report on the Farm Bureau survey. The survey averaged a 16-pound frozen turkey at $21.50 and ran about $5.52 per person, down 5% from 2024.

That $55.18 benchmark excluded coupons and combined-deal pricing. Iowa Farm Bureau reporting on the survey method notes volunteer shoppers collected regular in-store and online prices in early November, which limits direct comparison to loss-leader turkey promotions. Federal Trade Commission pricing guides also warn against advertising a sale against a fictitious former price, which must have been openly offered for a reasonably substantial recent period.
