Thanksgiving Discounts for Military Families: What to Expect

Save on turkey, Black Friday gifts and free holiday meal kits with dates, limits and ID checks explained.

Military families can expect Thanksgiving savings on turkeys, holiday store sales, retail discounts and free meal kits. Defense commissaries, the on-base grocery stores, plus military exchanges, retailers and nonprofits each set separate dates and ID rules. Plan by date first, then by eligibility.

Some grocery and store sales cluster around Thanksgiving week and Black Friday, while community meal programs need advance sign-up and can fill.

How much can turkeys cost at commissaries?

According to the Defense Commissary Agency in its Nov. 17, 2025 release, stateside stores including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam listed Shady Brook Farms and Honeysuckle turkeys at 49 cents per pound Nov. 17-30.

The same release listed Butterball at 97 cents per pound and Jennie-O at 79 cents per pound worldwide until Dec. 1, with no limits or minimum purchase. See the Defense Commissary Agency Thanksgiving announcement for the brand and date limits.

That structure helps families compare by brand and location. Stateside shoppers could pick the lower per-pound price, while overseas shoppers could still use the worldwide brands. Check weight and freezer space before buying, since open stock can move fast.

Can you shop the Exchange on Thanksgiving Day?

According to the Army & Air Force Exchange Service in its Nov. 19, 2025 holiday announcement, most Exchange stores were closed on Thanksgiving Day, with about 120 Express convenience locations open for essentials. Thanksgiving Day shopping was therefore mainly online.

See the Army and Air Force Exchange Service holiday announcement for store and online times. The same announcement set worldwide Black Friday opening at 8 a.m. Nov.

28, with online deals from midnight Central at ShopMyExchange.com. Examples included $300 off a Samsung 85-inch TV to $699 and up to 35% off vacuums. Buy essentials early if you rely on in-store shopping.

Use online for Thanksgiving Day, then compare Black Friday start times for larger items.

What retail savings help before Thanksgiving?

Target's military page advertises year-round military savings plus a limited 20%-off verified-military offer valid Nov. 5-11, which fits early Thanksgiving shopping, with terms and verification required. See Target's military discount page for dates and terms.

Expect an ID check before checkout. Read the date window, exclusions and use limits on that page before planning a trip.

Who gets free holiday meal kits?

Operation Homefront's 2025 Holiday Meals for Military program focuses on junior-enlisted families in grades E-1 to E-6. It provides free meal kits with essentials for a traditional holiday meal at dozens of nationwide events. See Operation Homefront's holiday program page for event details.

Bring ID and registration confirmation to the event. If your site fills, ask about nearby events rather than waiting.
