Thanksgiving Airport Security Wait Times: What to Expect

Plan which Thanksgiving travel day to fly and how early to arrive to keep checkpoint lines manageable.

Expect the longest Thanksgiving airport security lines on the Wednesday before the holiday and the Sunday after it. Expect the shortest lines on Thanksgiving Day itself, with early-morning flights often moving faster. TSA is the Transportation Security Administration, the agency that screens passengers at U.S.

airport checkpoints. According to the Transportation Security Administration in its holiday travel tips, travelers should arrive at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights.

Which days draw the longest lines?

According to the Federal Aviation Administration in its Thanksgiving travel forecast, Thanksgiving 2025 was expected to be the busiest in 15 years. The agency projected more than 360,000 flights in the holiday period, with over 52,000 flights on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

According to the Transportation Security Administration in its 2025 passenger volumes data, officers screened 3,134,613 people on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025. That Sunday-after-Thanksgiving total was the highest single-day checkpoint total in TSA history.

The Transportation Security Administration defines the national Thanksgiving travel period as Tuesday through the following Monday. In 2024, that meant Nov. 26 through Dec.

2, with sustained high volume across all those days. TSA checkpoint numbers show Thanksgiving Day itself is quietest, with 1,559,165 screened on Nov. 27, 2025, versus 2,753,036 the Wednesday before and 2,392,036 the Friday after.

How long could screening take?

According to the Transportation Security Administration in its Spokane holiday travel notice, the operating target is under 30 minutes in standard lanes. The target is under 10 minutes in TSA PreCheck lanes. PreCheck members see materially shorter Thanksgiving lines but not zero wait.

Peak morning and evening banks can still push both lanes past target. Allow buffer for bag checks, document checks, and crowded terminals.

What adds extra delay at the checkpoint?

Travelers without compliant ID or prepared bags face extra screening delays, the Transportation Security Administration says. Liquids, food items, gifts, and loose electronics slow divestiture and X-ray review. Repack before joining the line.

San Jose Mineta International Airport, citing TSA, says adults 18 and older have needed REAL ID-compliant identification or another accepted ID such as a passport since May 7, 2025. Travelers without an accepted ID should allow extra time for alternate verification. Check ID requirements before leaving home.

What can you do before you fly?

National records and forecasts do not predict any single airport or hour. The Transportation Security Administration says travelers should check conditions for their own airport and flight time. Add the number before check-in so the boarding pass shows the correct lane.

  • Check the free MyTSA app for wait times and delays before leaving.
  • Confirm your Known Traveler Number is in the reservation so PreCheck appears.
  • Fly early-morning or on Thanksgiving Day when your plans allow.
