Sweepstakes Rules Changed After Entry: Which Version Applies?

Learn which sweepstakes rules cover your entry and what proof to keep if prizes or dates change.

The rules posted when you clicked enter apply to your entry. That entry acts as acceptance of that version as a contract between you and the sponsor. Official rules are the written terms that set who may enter, how to enter, and what prizes are offered.

According to Bloomberg Law, they function as a binding contract between sponsor and each entrant, described in this binding-contract analysis. That is why your entry date matters more than later updates.

Why early and late entrants have different terms

You are judged under the version live when you entered. Later entrants are judged under the amended version. Both versions can exist in one promotion.

The VLP Law Group primer draws the same line for entrants. It advises saving the dated rules screenshot and entry confirmation. That record shows which wording you agreed to.

It helps if prize, deadline, or eligibility wording shifts.

What sponsors can change after launch

Promotion counsel start from a strict default. Thompson Coburn advises via Lexology that sponsors cannot change official rules after a sweepstakes has begun, explained in this mid-promotion change guidance. Extending dates, prizes, or eligibility midstream risks unfairness claims from early entrants.

Current sponsor rules typically reserve only narrow power to clarify wording. AT&T describes that power as clarification without materially affecting terms and conditions. The Pittsburgh Steelers rules use the same limit and treat disqualification or prize loss for misconduct as a separate issue.

A generic right-to-modify clause does not permit voiding already-earned entries or reducing advertised prizes.

When cancellation or a new drawing date is allowed

Some interruptions allow a sponsor to stop, pause, or alter the promotion. Disney's D23 rules state that fraud, virus, technical failure, or force majeure can trigger canceling, modifying, or suspending, shown in this cancellation and prior-entry rule. Winners are then selected from eligible entries received before that action.

Registration rules add another lock in large promotions. The Social Media Law Firm survey notes that New York and Florida require registration and bonding before launch for game promotions over $5,000 in total prizes. That filing locks the rules for residents entering those national sweepstakes.

A later web-page edit does not override the filed terms for those entrants.

What to keep if rules shift

Keep your own proof on the day you enter. Your saved copy decides questions about entry method, deadlines, and prize amounts. Do not rely on the current page alone.

Keep both the old and new versions until the prize is awarded and delivered.

  • Save the full rules page with the URL and date visible.
  • Keep the entry confirmation email or screen with time stamp.
  • Note the prize, entry deadline, age, location, and no-purchase entry method.
  • If terms change, enter again only if you still qualify under the new version.
