Student Discounts on Holiday Travel: What to Know

Students can cut train and airfares with valid ID and promo codes, but Thanksgiving blackouts apply.

Students can save on holiday travel with age-based rail fares and verified student IDs for trains and select international flights. A student discount here means a lower fare offered to enrolled students who show valid student ID and meet age and booking rules. Amtrak and select airlines keep student pricing available during the holidays, but peak-date limits can remove the savings.

Check age range, code, booking channel, and blackout dates before you plan around a lower price.

How does the Amtrak student fare work?

Amtrak lists a national 15% reduction for riders ages 17–24 with valid student ID when booking at least one day ahead with code V814 in the app, according to the Amtrak Oregon tariff guide. The reduction applies to qualifying coach and Acela Business fares. Have these details ready before you book: If one item is missing, the fare can price at the full adult rate.

Enter the code during booking rather than asking for an adjustment later.

  • age 17–24 at travel time
  • valid student ID for inspection on board
  • booking made at least one day ahead
  • code V814 entered in the app

Why can Thanksgiving week cost more?

Some student fares do not apply on the busiest travel days. Pacific Surfliner student terms list blackout dates around Thanksgiving, including Nov. 24–25 and Nov.

29–Dec. 1, 2026, when the 15% student fare cannot be used, according to the Pacific Surfliner student terms. That matters for holiday planning because those dates cover outbound and return travel.

A trip on Nov. 22 or Nov. 30 faces different pricing rules.

Compare the student fare for your exact date with the adult fare.

What ID proves student status?

Many travel sellers ask for current enrollment proof at purchase or boarding. The ISIC card is a full-time student ID issued in nearly 130 countries and tied to more than 150,000 student discounts on travel, lodging, museums and services verifiable in the ISIC app, according to the ISIC Association site. Keep a physical card or app record available during the trip.

A school ID may work for domestic rail, while international offers often ask for ISIC, ITIC, or IYTC. Check which card the fare requires before you pay.

Can students save on international flights?

Qatar Airways gives full-time university students with a valid ISIC, ITIC, or IYTC card up to 10% off selected Economy and Business fares through a promo code, while its Student Club adds baggage, date-change, and companion benefits, according to the Qatar Airways ISIC offer page. Selected fares means the lower price does not cover every flight or date. Use the promo code at checkout and keep the qualifying card available for verification.

For holiday changes, review the date-change and baggage terms for your fare class first. Then book the flight that actually carries the discount.
