Check the signup deadline, annual purchase rule, eligible items, and redemption window before your birthday.

Starbucks Rewards members must join at least seven days before their birthday, add their birth date, and make one Star-earning transaction before that birthday each year. The redemption window depends on membership level: Green members get one day, Gold members get seven days, and Reserve members get 30 days. The reward covers one eligible drink or food item at participating U.S.

Starbucks stores. Because the shortest window lasts only on the birthday, new and Green members should prepare their accounts in advance.

Who qualifies for the Birthday Reward?

Under the Starbucks Rewards terms effective March 10, 2026, members must complete all three requirements: Opening an account alone is not enough. Starbucks does not issue the reward when birthday information is missing, and the annual transaction requirement means an older account still needs qualifying activity before that year's birthday. A last-minute signup will not qualify if fewer than seven days remain.

Joining earlier provides a safer margin for entering the required information and completing the transaction.

  • Join Starbucks Rewards at least seven days before the birthday.
  • Enter the birthday in the Rewards account.
  • Complete at least one Star-earning transaction before the birthday each year.

How long is the redemption window?

The reward appears in an eligible member's account on the birthday. The Starbucks terms assign different redemption periods by Rewards level: Every new Rewards account starts at Green. Members reach Gold after earning 500 Stars within 12 months, while Reserve requires 2,500 new Stars during the following Gold-level year.

Your status when the reward is issued therefore matters. A Green member who waits until the day after the birthday has missed the stated window, while Gold and Reserve members have more time.

  • Green: Redeem on the birthday only.
  • Gold: Redeem during the seven-day period beginning on the birthday.
  • Reserve: Redeem during the 30-day period beginning on the birthday.

What can you choose?

The Birthday Reward covers one complimentary handcrafted beverage, food item, or ready-to-drink bottled beverage. It is not restricted to a handcrafted drink. However, the Starbucks Rewards terms exclude alcohol, multi-serve food or beverages, merchandise, and packaged coffee.

Choose a single eligible item and ask the store before ordering if its eligibility is unclear.

How do you redeem it?

Visit a participating Starbucks store during your applicable redemption window. Scan the member barcode in the Starbucks app or present a registered Starbucks Card. Not every Starbucks location can honor Rewards.

The company's terms require redemption at a participating store, so confirm the location before making a special trip—particularly if you have a one-day Green-level window. Check that the reward appears in your account before ordering. Also have the correct member barcode or registered card ready, since the store must connect the redemption to your Rewards account.

Different windows for eligible Starbucks employees

Eligible Starbucks employees, described as partners in the Rewards terms, receive longer windows at some levels. Green and Gold partners receive seven days beginning on their birthday, while Reserve partners receive 30 days. This exception matters most for Green partners.

Their seven-day period differs from the birthday-only window that applies to other Green members.
