Should You Use Savings or Credit for Holiday Travel?

Book holiday travel on credit for protection, then pay in full from savings and keep emergency cash untouched.
Use savings for holiday travel if you can cover the trip and keep your emergency cash intact. Use a credit card for the booking only if you can pay the full statement balance by the due date. Fares are running hot.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports airline fares were 22.4% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier, compared with 3.7% overall inflation, in the Bureau's October 2026 CPI release. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System reports carrying a balance cost an average 22.36% APR on accounts assessed interest in August 2026 in the Federal Reserve's October 2026 G.19 release.

How fast does unpaid travel debt grow?
An unpaid trip balance compounds fast at that rate. Interest starts building once revolving begins, so a December flight can still cost you in spring. Short trips create long payments when only part of the balance is paid.
A grace period is the time between the statement date and the due date when new purchases can avoid interest. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that paying the full balance by the due date avoids interest on new purchases, but failing to pay in full ends that grace period, in the Bureau's grace-period explainer.
Do travel rewards offset interest?
People who carry balances often pay far more in interest and fees than they receive in rewards. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found revolvers paid 94% of interest and fees while receiving under 30% of rewards. That pattern hits holiday flyers hard because ticket prices are elevated.
A rewards balance worth a small statement credit cannot cancel weeks of high-rate interest. Earning points only helps when the balance is cleared in full.
Why book on a credit card anyway?
Credit cards offer stronger payment protections for travel purchases. The Federal Trade Commission advises paying by credit card when possible because it allows disputes if travel is not delivered, in the Commission's July 2026 consumer alert. You can use both tools: charge for protection, then pay from savings.
This keeps cash as the funding source and credit as the payment channel.
- Book the flight or package on the card.
- Transfer the same amount from travel savings within a day or two.
- Pay the full statement balance by the due date to keep the grace period.
When should savings stay untouched?
Emergency savings is cash held for unplanned car, home, medical, or income-loss needs. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau uses that definition in its emergency-fund guide. Spending that buffer on flights or hotels removes protection against a costly setback.
If the trip would drain that reserve, change the trip rather than the account. Take a shorter stay, split driving, travel on a less busy date, or delay until travel savings are rebuilt. Set the card to autopay the full balance so a busy holiday week does not create an accidental revolving balance.
