Prepaid Visa and Mastercard Gift Cards: What Fees to Expect

Compare purchase, inactivity and replacement fees before you buy so more dollars reach the recipient.
Prepaid Visa and Mastercard gift cards are preloaded cards that carry a one-time purchase fee on top of the loaded value. Recipients generally pay nothing to spend the card, while waiting too long or losing the card can reduce the balance. Buyers control the upfront cost by comparing purchase fees.
Recipients protect the value by spending promptly and keeping card details safe.

What do you pay at checkout?
Expect the purchase fee to rise with the load amount. Blackhawk Network lists tiered online fees in its current Giftcards.com fee schedule. Fees run from $2.95 for $10-$74.99 loads to $5.95 for $150-$250 Visa and Mastercard gift cards.
Pathward-issued Visa or Mastercard gift cards disclose an activation fee up to $6.95 charged by the third-party seller at purchase. The agreement states the fee is not assessed against the card balance. Vanilla Visa and Mastercard gift cards charge only a per-card activation fee at sale, with no dormancy, service, or maintenance fees afterward.
Can the balance shrink if you wait?
Federal law allows dormancy, inactivity, or service fees only after 12 consecutive months without activity. Only one such fee is allowed per calendar month. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau states it must be clearly disclosed in its Ask CFPB guidance.
As one issuer example, Pathward assesses a $4.95 monthly inactivity fee starting in the 13th consecutive inactive month while funds remain. Using the card at least once every 12 months avoids the charge.
How long does the money last?
Gift-card funds must remain usable for at least five years from issuance or last load. If the plastic shows an earlier valid thru date, the issuer must replace it to preserve remaining funds. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains the replacement rule in its gift-card terms article.
Check the issuance or last-load date, not only the date printed on the card. Ask the issuer for a replacement card if the plastic expires while funds remain.
What does a lost card cost?
Losing a card can cost part of the balance. Pathward charges a $6.95 replacement fee. U.S.
Bank documents a $5.95 lost or stolen replacement fee in its gift-card FAQ, plus $2.00 monthly inactivity after 12 inactive months. Keep the card number apart from the card until the balance is spent.
How do you keep more of the value?
Recipients generally pay nothing to spend the card. Buyers should compare upfront purchase fees and issuers' inactivity and replacement terms. Use the full balance early, starting with the oldest card you hold.
- Compare the purchase fee for the same load amount before buying.
- Use the card within a year to avoid inactivity fees.
- Keep the card number and receipt until the balance is spent.
