Operation Santa: How Military Families Can Participate

Stateside military families can mail a Santa letter by Dec. 5, then seek holiday backups before Dec. 12.
Military families with a U.S. mailing address can join USPS Operation Santa by mailing a child's wish letter to Santa for volunteers to adopt. USPS Operation Santa is a holiday program where anonymous volunteers read posted letters after personal data is removed and then buy and ship gifts.
Deployed service members overseas cannot use the program right now. Stateside families should mail early and keep a backup plan because volunteers adopt only some letters.

Who Can and Cannot Use Operation Santa?
USPS Operation Santa serves only the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Military families stationed in those places can send letters like other households. USPS states on its current FAQ that deployed service members overseas cannot participate at this time.
A family with a stateside address can still send a letter from home, even during a deployment.
How Do You Mail a Letter That Can Be Adopted?
USPS explains on its get involved page that each letter needs a stamped envelope with correct postage. Print the child's full name and complete return address, including apartment number, on both the envelope and the letter. Use these steps to prepare the letter: Adopters select letters only after personal data is removed.
Clear wishes and a complete address help volunteers understand the request.
- Address the envelope to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888.
- List specific wishes in order of preference.
- Check postage, name, and return address before mailing.
What Are the 2026 Cutoff Dates?
USPS lists on its 2026 FAQ that letters were accepted starting September 14 and adopter registration opened November 2. Adoption opened November 16. Letters must be postmarked by December 5.
Adoption closes December 12 at 8pm ET. Posting, adoption, and delivery all depend on volunteer participation, so early mailing leaves more time to be seen.
Where Else Can Military Families Get Holiday Help?
Soldiers' Angels runs Holiday Adopt-A-Family for qualified military and veteran families, according to its August 2026 program release. Matched donors provide children's gifts and grocery cards for a holiday meal. Family applications ran September 1 to November 10 for 2026.
Operation Homefront offers two stateside paths, according to its holiday season announcement. Its Holiday Toy Drive distributed toys from November 1 to December 5. Its Holiday Meals for Military events require a MyOperationHomefront account and local event registration through December 21.
A stateside family can pair Operation Santa with one of these programs. Create the needed program account early and register for the local event before December 21.
