Learn where free sweepstakes entry instructions hide and how to avoid missing a format, registration, or deadline rule.

Find a sweepstakes' free entry method in its Official Rules, then search for "AMOE," "alternate method," "free method," or "mail-in." AMOE means "alternate method of entry"—a route that does not require a purchase. In the United States, a legitimate sweepstakes is free and decided by chance. The Federal Trade Commission says requiring payment or a purchase to enter—or to improve someone's odds—is illegal.

Start With the Official Rules

That makes the PCH Official Rules page a practical example of where sponsors place the controlling details. Search the rules for these terms:

  • AMOE
  • Alternate method or alternate means
  • Free method
  • Mail-in
  • No purchase necessary

Read Every Requirement Before Entering

Finding the free route is only the first step. Copy its instructions into a checklist before submitting anything, because a small formatting or timing mistake can invalidate an entry. Check for: Follow the AMOE instructions exactly as written.

Do not reuse requirements from another promotion, even when the same company sponsors both.

  • Who may enter
  • Registration or account requirements
  • Required personal and contact information
  • Online forms or specific mailing materials
  • Per-person and combined entry limits

"No Purchase Necessary" Has Limits

The Choice Privileges Mastercard Summer Travel Sweepstakes shows how detailed a mail-in route can be. Eligible U.S. residents may enter without making a card purchase by mailing a handwritten 3-by-5-inch card containing specified information in a stamped, hand-addressed #10 envelope, according to the Choice Privileges promotion rules.

Each mail entry must be sent separately and meet the stated format, postmark, and receipt deadlines. The promotion ends September 30, 2026. Although no qualifying purchase is required, the mail route still requires postage.

A free method may also require registration or share a limit with purchase-based entries. Under Unilever's FIFA World Cup 2026 rules, entrants must register for the program and submit the online AMOE form on time; entries are capped at 25 per person and prize pool across methods.

Separate Entry Rules From Prize-Claim Demands

"No purchase necessary" describes how someone may enter. It does not mean every message announcing a prize is trustworthy or that a winner must pay to receive it. The FTC warns that a demand for money, bank details, or credit-card information to claim a prize is a warning sign.

Its sweepstakes consumer guidance advises locating the sponsor's genuine contact information independently instead of relying on the message. If an advertisement emphasizes purchases or paid calls, return to the dated Official Rules and locate the direct no-purchase route. Save a copy of the instructions and record any submission, postmark, or receipt deadline before entering.
