New Year's Shipping Deadlines: When Carriers Slow Down

Plan around Jan. 1 closures and mid-December send-by dates to get gifts and returns delivered on time.
Carriers pause regular service on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, with no regular pickup or delivery. Ground packages need more lead time in December, while faster express options keep moving later in the month.
USPS Ground Advantage, the Postal Service's basic ground shipping option, carries a mid-December send-by date for holiday arrival. Express services have later send-by dates, but all carriers close or limit service on Jan. 1.

What stops on New Year's Day?
USPS closed all Post Office locations on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2025, and New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2026, with no regular delivery.
Regular operations resumed Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, according to USPS in the New Jersey holiday operations update.
UPS lists Jan. 1 as a UPS holiday with no pickup or delivery service. UPS Express Critical remains available that day, according to UPS in the UPS holiday shipping schedule.
FedEx marks Jan. 1 as closed for major services and offices. Only Custom Critical-type service operates that day, according to FedEx in the FedEx 2026 holiday operations schedule.
When did December send-by dates fall?
For the 2025 holidays, USPS recommended Dec. 17, 2025, as the send-by date for USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail for expected delivery before Dec. 25 in the contiguous U.S.
The dates apply to mail sent within the contiguous states, not to Alaska, Hawaii, or international mail. USPS recommended Dec. 18, 2025, for Priority Mail and Dec.
20, 2025, for Priority Mail Express for the same expected delivery window. Priority Mail Express is the fastest USPS option listed here, with the latest send-by date, according to USPS in the USPS 2025 holiday mailing dates.
Why are these dates expectations?
USPS notes that actual delivery may vary by origin, destination, acceptance time, and other conditions. A package dropped off late in the day may start moving the next business day. Weather, volume surges, missed pickups, and incorrect addresses can add delay.
Senders should treat published dates as planning guides and allow extra days for important arrivals.
How should you time a New Year's arrival?
Mail early in December if you use Ground Advantage or First-Class Mail. Those services move by truck over longer distances and slow down when volume rises. Save faster services for late-December needs.
Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express have later send-by dates and suit gifts, returns, or documents with a firm arrival goal.
- check the service level before you pay
- confirm the acceptance cutoff at your location
- keep the tracking number until delivery
- allow one extra day around Dec. 25 and Jan. 1
