Laptop Deals: What Specs Matter Most This Holiday Season

Compare NPU, memory, display, battery, and ports before you click buy on a holiday laptop deal.

This holiday season, the specs that matter most are memory, storage, display brightness, battery life, ports, and AI chip strength. A Copilot+ PC, Microsoft's label for a Windows 11 AI laptop with fast on-device AI hardware, is worth checking if you want AI features. Deal tags can hide cut-down configs.

Use the checklist below to compare like for like before you buy.

Verification note: Program terms and availability can change. This page was checked against linked sources on November 06, 2026.

Does it qualify as an AI PC?

Microsoft sets the Copilot+ PC bar at Windows 11, an NPU of at least 40 TOPS, 16GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Details are in Microsoft's Copilot+ PC guide. TOPS means trillions of operations per second for AI tasks.

That hardware unlocks on-device Recall, live-caption translation, and Cocreator. An NPU number alone does not settle it. Engadget reported Intel's Core Ultra 200V clears the 40-TOPS bar at up to 48 TOPS.

TechTimes noted a 12-TOPS Intel Core Ultra 5 225U fails it. Verify the exact chip name on the spec sheet.

How much memory and storage do you need?

Apple's current MacBook Air starts at 16GB unified memory, with 24GB and 32GB options, and a 512GB SSD, with 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options, according to Apple's current MacBook Air specs. A holiday deal with 8GB RAM or 256GB storage is a cut-down or older config. For Windows, treat 16GB and 256GB as the floor for AI models.

Many thin laptops have soldered memory and storage. You cannot add more later.

  • Check RAM size and whether it is soldered
  • Check SSD size and whether it can be replaced
  • Confirm the exact chip, NPU TOPS, and Windows 11 version

Is the screen and battery built for travel?

The Air's baseline is a 13.6-inch 2560x1664 IPS Liquid Retina panel at 500 nits with P3 wide color and True Tone. A dimmer sub-300-nit or narrow-gamut screen looks washed out beside it. Compare brightness, resolution, and color coverage, not just screen size.

Battery claims need the same care. Apple rates the 13-inch Air at up to 18 hours of video streaming and 15 hours of wireless web from a 53.8Wh battery. Ask whether a Windows rival cites tested video, web, or mixed use.

A smaller battery with a power-hungry chip will fall short on a travel day.

Will your dock, monitor, and charger work?

The Air carries two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports at up to 40Gb/s plus MagSafe 3 and fast charging with a 70W or higher USB-PD source. That mix supports fast storage, an external display, and quick top-ups. A deal laptop with one port or USB-2-only Type-C limits those options.

Count ports before you buy. Look for two high-speed USB4 or Thunderbolt ports, a separate charging port where offered, and clear fast-charge support. If you use an SD card or wired network, add the cost of a dock.

Is it still supported?

Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 get only security updates through October 10, 2028, as explained in this Microsoft Learn update on Windows 10 support. Old-stock Windows 10-only laptops can leave you with fewer fixes and app updates.

Reject a Windows 10-only deal unless a free Windows 11 upgrade is confirmed in writing. Confirm the laptop ships with Windows 11 24H2 or later for Copilot+ features. Keep the return window noted until setup and updates finish.
