Is Kanopy Free? How Library Tickets and Unlimited Titles Work

Kanopy is free and ad-free with a participating public library card or university login. Your library sets a monthly ticket limit, and some titles use no tickets at all.
Yes. Kanopy costs you nothing if your public library or university offers it. You sign in with a library card or university login, and the films are ad-free. The catch is a monthly ticket limit that your library sets, though some titles, including all Kanopy Kids videos, use no tickets.

How Kanopy can be free
Kanopy's homepage says it lets you "stream thousands of films for free, thanks to the generous support of your public library or university." Your library or school pays for access, not you. On its library-facing Kanopy PLUS page, Kanopy describes packs that libraries "pay upfront yearly," so "all your patrons can watch at one fixed price."
So Kanopy is free to you as a patron, but only if your library or university has signed up. Kanopy's site also has an FAQ entry for checking whether your library or university offers the service.
Does Kanopy have ads?
No. Kanopy says it partners with public libraries and universities "to bring you ad-free films and series." Its App Store listing says the same: "Stream thousands of films for free without ads through your library."
That is the main difference from free ad-supported apps like Tubi or Pluto TV. Those apps are free because of ads. Kanopy is free because your library pays, which is why it limits how much you can watch.
How Kanopy tickets work
Kanopy's help article on using tickets explains the system for public library patrons:
- "Tickets are used to play videos on Kanopy. Each month, you receive a set number of tickets from your library."
- "Your tickets reset on the first day of the month, and unused tickets don't roll over to the next month."
- Your remaining tickets appear in the top-right corner of the homepage.
- Each title shows how many tickets it needs and how long you have to watch it once you start.
- If you run out, you'll see a "Not enough tickets" message that links to titles you can still watch.
Kanopy does not publish one ticket number for everyone because each library sets its own. Check your account or ask your library.
Titles that don't use tickets
According to Kanopy's help article on unlimited viewing titles, these are "videos you can watch without using any tickets. There's no limit on the number of unlimited viewing titles you can watch or the number of times you can watch them." To find them, look for shelves with "unlimited viewing" in the name or use the "0 tickets" search filter.
Kanopy also says "All Kanopy Kids videos are unlimited viewing," and that Kanopy Kids videos "never use tickets." That makes Kanopy useful for families even when your tickets are gone.
When access is limited
Libraries manage Kanopy on a budget. If you see "Streaming is currently limited at your library," Kanopy's help center says your library "has temporarily limited access to Kanopy" so it can budget effectively. You can still finish titles you started (if your viewing window has time left) and watch titles that don't require tickets.
What you need to sign up
- A card from a public library that offers Kanopy, or a login from a participating university.
- A device. Kanopy says it is "available on mobile, web, and living room devices," including TVs, phones and tablets.
Kanopy's help center also covers adding a second library card or switching between libraries if you belong to more than one system.

Bottom line
Kanopy is free and ad-free for anyone whose library or university offers it. You get a monthly ticket allowance set by your library that resets on the 1st and doesn't roll over. Unlimited viewing titles and all Kanopy Kids videos don't count against it. If your library doesn't offer Kanopy, note that Kanopy's homepage lists sign-up only through a public library or university, so ask your library about it or check a nearby system you're eligible to join.
