How to Use Gift Cards Before They Expire After Christmas

Check balances early, use split payments, and cash out small store balances under state rules.

Use Christmas gift cards after the holiday by checking the balance, activating bank-brand cards, and spending the amount in one or two trips. Ask for split payment when the balance is short, and request cash for tiny store balances where state law allows it. Federal rules give you time, but quick use avoids fees and lost cards.

A store gift card is prepaid credit for one retailer, while a general-use card carries a bank-brand logo and works at many stores.

Check dates, balances, and fees first

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau gift-card guidance, federal law bars gift cards that expire in less than five years. That protection covers store cards and general-use prepaid cards after issuance or last load. The Bureau also states that issuers cannot charge dormancy fees until a card sits unused for 12 straight months, as explained in its prepaid-card expiration guidance.

After that point, only one disclosed fee per month is allowed. Early use after Christmas avoids those charges entirely. A printed expiration date does not always mean the funds expired.

Call the number on the card, and if money remains the issuer must provide a free replacement card.

Spend small balances without leaving money behind

Check the exact balance first, then ask the cashier for a split-tender charge. That means the merchant charges only the gift-card balance to the card and you pay the rest another way. Many online and mail-order merchants do not permit split tender, so use small balances in stores when possible.

Card-issuer help from Pathward describes this split-tender step for spending below the purchase price in its gift-card help page. California law makes store certificates under $15 redeemable for cash on request, effective April 1, 2026 under SB 22, per the enrolled text of California SB 22. New York law allows cash-out of store-card balances under $5 for cards bought on or after Dec.

10, 2022.

How do Visa and Mastercard gift cards differ?

Activate bank-brand cards before shopping and register them where the issuer offers registration. Use them only for available funds at U.S. merchants that accept Visa debit or Debit Mastercard.

Do not use these cards at ATMs or for cash access, according to card-issuer help from Pathward. Keep the card number and receipt until the balance reaches zero.

  • Activate the card and register it if offered
  • Confirm the exact remaining balance
  • Tell the cashier the exact amount to charge to the gift card
  • Pay any remainder with cash, debit, or credit

Know state rules that extend your time

California generally prohibits expiration dates on retailer gift certificates. Bank and mall cards usable at multiple stores may still carry dates, according to holiday guidance from the California Attorney General. Lost or stolen cards are not always replaceable under that guidance.

Use cards promptly and keep receipts with the card numbers. New York requires gift certificates bought on or after Dec. 10, 2022 to remain valid at least nine years, according to the New York State Senate.

Those cards ban most fees except a one-time open-loop activation fee. Keep receipts with cards until the balance hits zero.
