How to Use Gas Rewards Points Before They Expire

Check expiration dates, use oldest fuel rewards first, and apply them before paying to avoid losing savings.

Use gas rewards points before they expire by checking the expiration date, then applying the oldest points to fuel or store credit at the pump, in the app, or in the store. Gas rewards points are per-gallon discounts or points balances tied to a fuel brand or grocery account. Expiration windows are short in some programs.

According to Kroger, Kroger Fuel Points expire the last day of the month after they are earned, for example July points expire August 31, as explained in Kroger's fuel points guide. According to Circle K, Inner Circle rewards generally expire 30 days after issuance and must be redeemed by the date shown in the app, as explained in Circle K's Inner Circle terms.

When do points usually expire?

Expiration depends on the program, not on when you pump. Grocery-linked fuel points often reset monthly. Brand points may last months or until year-end.

According to Kroger, 100 points convert to 10 cents per gallon and 1,000 points convert to $1 per gallon on one purchase of up to 35 gallons, as explained in Kroger's fuel points page. That makes timing matter. Redeem a large balance before the month-end cutoff rather than saving it.

According to ExxonMobil Fuels, Rewards+ points that are at least one year old expire every December 31, measured from issuance, and terminated accounts or program changes can cancel points earlier, as explained in ExxonMobil Fuels terms and conditions. Redeem before year-end if you hold older points.

How do you apply savings at the pump?

Start the rewards transaction before you pay. That order lets the discount attach to that fill-up. According to the Fuel Rewards Network, Shell Fuel Rewards members redeem savings at participating Shell stations by inserting or swiping a Fuel Rewards card or linked payment card, or entering an Alt ID, before paying, limited to 20 gallons per purchase per vehicle, as explained in Fuel Rewards Network's Home Depot FAQs.

Use one vehicle per transaction when a gallon cap applies. Other programs use the app, phone number, or card. Enter the identifier first, confirm the discount on the screen, then select fuel grade and pump.

What should you redeem first?

Use the oldest rewards first. Many balances contain overlapping offers with different end dates. A 35-gallon allowance covers most single fill-ups.

A 20-gallon limit may leave part of a truck or SUV tank at full price, so plan that purchase around the expiration.

  • Check each balance and expiration date in the app or account page.
  • Apply the earliest-expiring reward to your next fill-up.
  • Fill closer to full when a per-purchase gallon limit applies.
  • Split household fill-ups so each vehicle uses rewards before cutoff.

How can you avoid losing small balances?

Redeem small amounts often. Frequent small redemptions prevent forfeiture in programs with 30-day windows. Track issuance dates, not just totals.

A balance can look active while its oldest portion is about to lapse. Set a monthly fuel stop before the last day of the month if your points reset monthly. Keep account details current.

A changed phone number, lost card, or unlinked payment method can slow redemption at the pump. Link the card and Alt ID before you need them, then confirm the discount appears before fueling.
