How to Use Credit Card Points for Last-Minute Holiday Gifts

Turn points into email gift cards or checkout credit for a holiday gift that still arrives on time.

Use credit card points for email e-gift cards or instant checkout redemptions when a holiday gift must arrive quickly. Credit card points are rewards earned on card spending that can be traded for gift cards, travel, cash value, or merchandise. Physical cards and merchandise can miss a tight deadline.

Last-minute givers should pick delivery methods that arrive by email or apply at checkout.

Which options work for a tight deadline?

Email e-gift cards and pay-with-points checkout options move faster than mail. They can reach the recipient or apply to an order without waiting for shipping. Physical gift cards and merchandise commonly take 10 business days and up to 20 business days in peak redemption season, according to First Citizens Bank in its credit card rewards guide.

That timing makes mailed items risky close to the holiday. Choose an emailed card or an instant redemption when time is short. Check the estimated delivery wording before confirming the redemption.

How do gift card redemptions work?

Chase says Ultimate Rewards members can redeem points for gift cards through the portal or app, typically at 1 cent per point, with occasional promotional discounts offering higher value, as explained in the Chase gift card explanation. A recipient who likes a particular store can receive a card for that retailer. American Express says members can redeem Membership Rewards anytime by logging in and using Redeem Rewards for gift cards, statement credits, travel, transfers to airline and hotel partners, or annual-fee coverage, as described in the American Express Membership Rewards guide.

That menu lets a giver pick a gift card or use travel and credit options for a trip gift. Pick the card brand the recipient will actually use. Small balances can still cover a meal, book, app subscription, or stocking stuffer.

Can you pay with points at checkout?

Amazon Shop with Points lets linked Chase Ultimate Rewards cardholders apply points instantly at checkout for all or part of an order, at 1,000 points equals $8, or 0.8 cents per point, according to the Amazon Shop with Points page for Chase Ultimate Rewards. The points discount can reduce the out-of-pocket cost of a toy, kitchen tool, book set, or winter accessory. Chase says the same points can also be redeemed for cash back, travel through Chase Travel, and purchases with select merchants, as described in the Chase explanation of how Ultimate Rewards works.

Travel can sometimes be worth more than gift cards. Link the card before shopping so the points option appears at checkout. Compare the point value against gift-card value when both are available.

What limits should you plan around?

Digital delivery is fast, but not always instant. Capital One says Digital Cards are typically emailed to the primary account email immediately after redemption, but can take up to two weeks. Account-credit redemptions also have timing rules.

Capital One says account-credit cash redemptions usually post within 2-3 business days but may take up to 60 days, lower the balance but do not count toward the minimum payment, and all redemptions are final. Redeem early enough to allow for the longer estimate. Save the confirmation and check that the gift email did not land in spam.
