How to Track Tax Forms After Winning a Year-End Sweepstakes

Track your sweepstakes 1099-MISC by sponsor contact, January delivery, and IRS transcripts before you file.
To track tax forms after winning a year-end sweepstakes, contact the sponsor to confirm your mailing address and W-9 information, then check your IRS Individual Online Account for filed forms. A tax form here usually means Form 1099-MISC, Box 3 Other Income, which reports sweepstakes prizes that involve no wager. You must report cash winnings and the fair market value of noncash prizes like cars and trips as income, even if no form arrives.
Sponsors must report prizes and awards totaling $600 or more, rising to $2,000 for payments made after Dec. 31, 2025, with later inflation adjustments.

Which form covers a sweepstakes win?
Sweepstakes prizes are reported on Form 1099-MISC, Box 3 Other Income. They are not reported on Form W-2G for gambling because no wager is involved. Keep the sponsor name, prize description, win date, and fair market value with your tax records.
For a trip, save the sponsor's value letter and any receipts for taxes or fees you paid.
When should the form arrive?
Sponsors must furnish Form 1099-MISC to the winner by Jan. 31 of the year after the prize year and file Copy A with the IRS, according to the IRS in its return due dates guidance. A December 2026 win means watch mail and email in January 2027.
If you moved after entering, update your address with the sponsor promptly. A form sent to an old address can delay your filing.
How do you check for a missing form?
Winners tracking a missing form should first contact the sweepstakes sponsor or payer to confirm address, W-9 information, and whether a form was issued. Ask whether the prize met the reporting threshold and when the form was mailed. Winners can view filed 1099 data in an IRS Individual Online Account through a wage and income transcript covering Forms W-2, 1099, 1098 and 5498, according to the IRS in its account transcript guidance.
If contact fails and the form is still missing by end of February, winners can ask the IRS for help at 800-829-1040.
- Confirm sponsor contact, prize department, and date you returned Form W-9
- Confirm mailing address, email for electronic delivery, and amount reported
- Save each reply, tracking number, and transcript screenshot with dates
What if nothing shows up before you file?
Transcripts only show forms actually filed with the IRS and current-year data may be incomplete until earnings are reported, so winners must still file on time using their own records, according to the IRS in its transcript guidance. Do not wait past the filing deadline for a late form. Report the full prize value on your return even without a 1099-MISC, as the IRS explains in its gambling income guidance.
If a form arrives later with a different amount, keep both records and correct the return if needed.
