How to Track Credit Card Points Earned During the Holidays

Learn where holiday card points post, how long posting takes, and how to keep balances ready to use.
To track credit card points earned during the holidays, log in to your card issuer's website or mobile app and open the rewards balance page. Credit card points are rewards balances that grow with eligible purchases and can later be applied toward redemptions offered by the issuer. Holiday spending often posts in stages, so the balance you see today may not yet include this week's purchases.
Checking the activity detail, statement total, and posting notes helps you match gifts and travel to the points they earned.

Where do balances appear?
American Express members can see the total Membership Rewards balance on the Home dashboard and a detailed breakdown on the Points Summary page, according to American Express in how to view Membership Rewards points. The monthly card statement also shows the total balance plus recent charges and program news. Capital One cardholders can use the Rewards hub on the website or mobile app to see current balance, earnings activity, and redemption options, according to Capital One in how to manage credit card rewards.
Chase members can review Ultimate Rewards at chase.com/ultimaterewards and on the monthly statement, including travel booked through Chase Travel.
When will holiday purchases post?
New American Express charges first appear as pending points. Spending from a prior statement appears as points available on payment, which become usable within 24-72 hours after payment is received. Capital One generally displays earned rewards online within 10 days of purchase, but posting can take up to two statement cycles, so late-December purchases may not appear until January.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points are earned at the close of each monthly billing cycle, according to Chase in how to use Ultimate Rewards and the travel portal.
Which holiday spending earns points?
Capital One awards rewards only on net purchases minus credits or returns. Cash advances, balance transfers, account-access checks, and cash equivalents earn no rewards. That distinction matters in December, when gifts are exchanged and travel plans change.
A refund reduces the purchase total used to calculate rewards, so check earnings activity after returns post.
Why might expected points be missing?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's May 9, 2024 Issue Spotlight on several hundred complaints found four recurring reasons consumers missed rewards: unexpected promotional conditions, devaluation, redemption problems, and revocation, according to the Bureau in its Issue Spotlight on credit card rewards. Holiday bonus offers fall into the first category when extra terms apply. An account must also stay open and in good standing to redeem.
A suspended, delinquent, or closed account may stop earning or forfeit unredeemed holiday rewards.
How can you keep a clear holiday record?
A short weekly check takes little time during a busy shopping season. Compare receipts with the rewards activity page, not only the card charge list.
- Save receipts for gifts, travel, and online orders until points post
- Note purchase dates for late-December charges that may post in January
- Check activity again after a return, exchange, or travel credit
- Pay on time and keep the account current so points remain redeemable
