How to Track a Lost Black Friday Package

Track a stalled holiday parcel by carrier, file the right claim on time, and request a refund if needed.

To track a lost Black Friday package, open the order page and check the carrier tracking number for the last scan and delivery address. If the scan shows stalled, misdelivered, or prematurely delivered, follow that carrier's search or claim path before asking for a refund. A lost parcel here means a holiday order with no movement, a wrong-door delivery, or a delivered scan with no box.

Holiday volume raises misdeliveries and porch errors. A short check first saves a denied claim later.

Check tracking before filing

Open the retailer's order details and copy the carrier name and tracking number. USPS notes that the last scan, delivery address, and scan history show whether a parcel is stalled, misdelivered, or marked delivered. Match the delivery address to your mailbox, unit number, and any pickup point.

Check the porch, neighbors, and alternate delivery locations. Save the tracking view before you file anything.

  • Verify tracking number and delivery address in the order.
  • Note last scan time, place, and delivered versus stalled wording.
  • Photograph porch and ask neighbors and building staff.

What does a USPS search cover?

USPS explains in its missing-mail help from USPS that you should check USPS Tracking first, then submit a Missing Mail search. Start the search at MissingMail.USPS.com beginning 7 days after mailing. Have sender and recipient addresses, tracking number, mailing date, and package description ready.

A USPS search only looks for the item and does not pay compensation. If the item had insurance, file a separate USPS insurance claim. USPS help summaries place that insurance deadline generally no later than 60 days from mailing.

How do UPS and FedEx traces work?

UPS states in its claim support from UPS that you should check porches, neighbors, and alternate delivery locations first. The sender or receiver can then start an online claim, with lost or damaged-package claims started within 60 days of scheduled delivery. FedEx explains in its claim help from FedEx that you track with the 12- to 22-digit tracking number.

Use Manage Delivery and Report Missing Package if the parcel shows delivered. File an online claim so FedEx can run a trace and notify you of the outcome.

What if the seller will not help?

For marketplace orders such as Amazon, Amazon Customer Service points to Track Package and Problem with Order in Your Orders. Allow about 48 hours after a premature delivered scan before reporting. Amazon handles orders it sold or fulfilled, while third-party orders start with the seller.

The FTC states in the Mail Order Rule from the FTC that sellers must ship by the promised date. If no date was stated, sellers must ship within 30 days, notify you of delay, and offer cancellation with prompt refund. The CFPB notes that non-receipt can qualify as a billing error.

If the seller will not refund a credit purchase, send a written billing-error notice to the issuer within 60 days after the charge appeared. Keep a copy and proof of mailing.
