How to Stack Small Business Saturday Deals With Coupons

Learn which coupon combos shops accept and how to present them before you pay on Small Business Saturday.

To stack Small Business Saturday deals with coupons, bring different discount types and ask the shop to combine them before you pay. Stacking works only when the store allows it. Small Business Saturday is the Saturday-after-Thanksgiving push to drive holiday traffic to independents.

American Express started Shop Small in 2010, and set November 29 as the 2025 date in its Shop Small guide.

Find qualifying shops before Saturday

Use the free Shop Small Map to make a short list of independents. American Express says in its Shop Small guide the map lists only qualifying Amex-accepting merchants and may contain errors. Pick two or three nearby shops so you have backup options.

Call or check each shop page before Saturday. Ask if it accepts Amex and how it handles paper or digital coupons at the register.

What combinations can you stack?

Stacking is not automatic. It combines different coupon types only when the store allows it. Target notes in its coupons and deals policy stacking means one manufacturer coupon plus one category offer plus one item-level offer per item.

Use that pattern as a question script.

  • ask if you can use a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together
  • ask if a category discount can join an item discount
  • ask how many coupons can apply to one item

Plan a small test basket

Bring one item with two matching discounts rather than a full cart. Ask the cashier to try the combination before you add more items. If the shop declines one part, keep the larger saving and save the other coupon.

Note which types combined so your next stop goes faster.

Present everything before you pay

Have paper coupons sorted and phone brightness up for digital barcodes. Target states in its coupons and deals policy coupons need a scannable barcode at checkout, cannot be added to prior purchases, and clearance is excluded unless noted. Small shops often follow the same timing.

Hand all coupons and loyalty codes to the cashier before the total is rung.
