What counts as a qualifying purchase?

Qualifying spend must happen in one transaction. Splitting a purchase into smaller charges does not combine toward the minimum. American Express Middle East notes that its Jan.

12 to Mar. 12, 2026 offer paid AED 20 back for each single spend of AED 50 or more, up to five times monthly (the 2026 Shop Small details). A AED 30 charge plus a AED 25 charge would miss, while one AED 50 charge would qualify.

Search the exact street address before you visit. Pay at the counter as one charge and keep the receipt until the credit posts. If the address is missing from the map, choose a different listed shop.

How should caps shape your plan?

Caps reward several planned visits rather than one large trip. Once you reach the allowed number of credits, extra spending in the period brings no added credit. Use small, regular purchases that each clear the threshold on their own: Leave a little room above the minimum in case tax or a small price change affects the total.

  • buy groceries, coffee or supplies you already need
  • pay in person, not through a combined online cart
  • track how many qualifying visits you have used

When does timing add value?

Census Bureau notes that Small Business Saturday, founded by American Express in 2010 and co-sponsored by the SBA since 2011, fell on Nov. 29 in 2025 (the Census overview). Check the current sponsor page for this year's dates before you shop.
