How to Score Free Wi-Fi on Flights This Winter

Enroll in free airline loyalty programs before boarding to get complimentary Wi-Fi on equipped winter flights.
You can score free Wi-Fi on winter flights by joining the airline's free loyalty program before boarding and flying on an equipped aircraft. JetBlue is the exception, with fast, free Fly-Fi broadband for every passenger on every plane without a loyalty account. Most other large airlines limit free access to enrolled members on select planes.
Enrollment costs nothing, but coverage varies by aircraft and route, so check your flight before you leave.

What should you do before boarding?
Enroll in the airline's free loyalty program at home, not at the gate. According to Delta Air Lines, free access generally requires membership and an equipped aircraft, so confirm both in advance. Use this quick check for winter travel: If your plane is unequipped or you are not enrolled, Delta Air Lines notes that access can cost about $8–$10.
- Join the free program for the airline you will fly.
- Look for the airline's free-Wi-Fi badge or Starlink notifier for your flight.
- Download boarding passes and entertainment apps before takeoff in case coverage changes.
How do Delta and American handle free access?
Delta offers free Delta Sync Wi-Fi presented by T-Mobile across its full international network spanning six continents on nearly 1,300 Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft, according to the Delta News Hub in Delta's Wi-Fi network update. You need a Delta loyalty account and a Wi-Fi-equipped plane. American provides complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi exclusively to AAdvantage members on Viasat- and Intelsat-equipped aircraft covering roughly 90% of its fleet and more than 2 million flights yearly beginning January 2026, sponsored by AT&T, according to the American Airlines Newsroom in American's complimentary Wi-Fi announcement.
Nonmembers and unequipped aircraft fall outside that benefit.
Where does Starlink free Wi-Fi apply?
United provides fast, free Starlink Wi-Fi to MileagePlus members, including its first transatlantic Starlink widebody customer flight, Newark–London flight 14 on a Boeing 777-200, with preflight notification if Starlink is equipped, according to the United Airlines press release in United's Starlink rollout announcement. Join MileagePlus for free before travel and watch for that notification. Southwest gives Rapid Rewards members free onboard Wi-Fi thanks to T-Mobile, continuing in 2027 powered by Starlink where available, while nonmembers on select aircraft pay $8 per device, according to Southwest Airlines in Southwest's Rapid Rewards changes page.
Alaska Airlines also offers complimentary ultra-fast Starlink Wi-Fi to free Atmos Rewards members on Starlink-equipped aircraft on select flights starting in 2026, with T-Mobile as presenting partner, according to the T-Mobile Newsroom.
What if your flight has no free option?
JetBlue states that passengers can join the Fly-Fi network and portal without needing a loyalty account. That makes it the simplest choice for travelers who do not want another account. For other airlines, bring an offline backup for work or entertainment.
Check the airline page for your specific flight number, since the same route can use different aircraft on different days.
