How to Save on Tolls During Holiday Travel

Use your own transponder, travel off-peak, and pay rental tolls direct to keep more holiday money.
You save on tolls during holiday travel by using the toll agency's own transponder account, keeping your plates current, and crossing outside peak hours. Rental drivers save by paying the toll agency directly inside its payment window instead of using the rental company's toll plan. A transponder is a small device or sticker linked to a prepaid toll account.
Holiday road demand is very high, and AAA Newsroom projected 81.8 million Thanksgiving 2025 travelers, with about 73 million driving. That volume makes early setup matter.

Why your own transponder pays less
New York State Thruway drivers with a NY E-ZPass pay much less than plate-billed drivers. The N.Y. State Thruway Authority toll calculator shows Pennsylvania line to Exit 47 at $5.08 with NY E-ZPass versus $8.89 by Tolls by Mail, as shown in the Thruway toll calculator.
E-ZPass accounts billed by plate pay the mail rate, so plates must match. Florida works the same way. SunPass says SunPass users always pay the lowest Florida toll and save an average of 25% versus cash and Toll-by-Plate.
Toll-by-Plate also adds a $2.50 administrative charge per invoice, according to the SunPass FAQ. Order or refill the correct regional account before you leave. Add rental and family cars, check the card balance, and confirm plates.
Can changing your crossing time lower the price?
Yes, at Port Authority Hudson crossings. E-ZPass rates are about $16.79 peak and $14.79 off-peak versus about $23.30 by mail, according to the Port Authority 2026 toll schedule. Peak means weekday 6-10 a.m.
and 4-8 p.m., plus weekend 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Shifting a holiday trip earlier, later, or to a weekday edge can cut the toll. Mail billing costs the most, so do not cross without an E-ZPass if you can avoid it.
When does carpooling cut bridge tolls?
Bay Area holiday carpools can pay a reduced $4.25 bridge toll during weekday commute hours instead of the full toll. You must have a FasTrak account and a Flex tag set to "3", as explained in the Bay Area carpool guide. Plate-only carpools are invoiced the full toll.
Set the switch before the bridge, carry the required riders, and use the marked carpool lane.
How do rental drivers avoid extra toll fees?
Pay the local toll agency yourself, quickly. Orange County's Toll Roads let rental and infrequent drivers pay online within five days before or five days after driving. That direct payment avoids rental-company toll-convenience fees that run about $4.95-$5.35 per usage day up to $34.65 per rental, according to The Toll Roads and TollPass.
National's TollPass charges $3.95 per usage day up to $19.75 per rental plus tolls. National says drivers can avoid it by paying cash where available, avoiding toll roads, or using a personal transponder after confirming coverage.
- Confirm whether your route uses cashless tolls.
- Save the rental plate, dates, and toll receipts.
- Pay through the agency site inside its five-day window.
What should you check before departure?
Confirm the transponder works in each state on your route. Update plates, payment method, and mailing address. Plan toll routes in advance so peak charges and cashless segments do not surprise you.
