How to Return a Gift That's Already Been Opened

Learn which opened gifts Target and Apple accept, what time limits apply, and how gift receipts affect refunds.
You can often return an opened gift if it is in resaleable shape and inside the store's time limit. Ask the giver for a gift receipt, then bring the item with its parts and packaging back to the seller. Opening usually removes the seal that marks an item as new.
Staff will check for wear, missing pieces, and damage. Your timing, proof of purchase, and packing decide the result.

Get a gift receipt first
A gift receipt hides the price and links the item to the order. Ask the giver for it before you visit the store. Target says buyers can request one at purchase or later at Guest Services with the original receipt, as explained in Target's gift receipt help page.
Gather these pieces before you go: Put small pieces in a bag so nothing is lost. Keep the box even if torn. Clean the item lightly if use left marks.

What opening changes at the register
Expect closer inspection once the seal is broken. Target says most unopened items in new condition can be refunded or exchanged within 90 days. Opened, damaged, or receiptless items may be denied a refund or exchange, as stated in Target's general return policy.
Rinse wear off where safe. Repack cords, tags, and inserts. Missing pieces lower the chance of an exchange.
Why electronics face shorter windows
Electronics lose return time fast. Target shortens the window for electronics and entertainment items to 30 days for return or exchange. Apple and Beats products, including mobile phones, must go back within 14 days, as described in Target's electronics return policy.
Check the calendar first for phones, consoles, and audio gear. Bring chargers and cables with the device. If the box was opened for setup, keep it together.
How Apple gift returns pay out
Apple treats gift returns differently from buyer returns. A gift-receipt return comes back as an Apple Gift Card rather than cash, as explained in Apple's retail sales policy. Bring all parts, accessories, and packing to keep review simple.
Do not expect cash at the counter. Plan how you will use the card balance. Save the gift card number in a safe place.
