How to Return a Gift Bought on a Payment Plan

See who receives the refund, which app taps pause payments, and why buyers should keep paying during a gift return.

To return a gift bought on a payment plan — a buy now, pay later loan split into installments — start the return with the retailer. Then record the return in the lender's app so remaining payments can be adjusted once the store confirms it. The recipient will usually need help from the buyer.

Refunds go to the buyer's loan or card, not to the recipient. The buyer should keep paying until the lender posts the credit.

Start with the retailer

A gift bought on installments must first satisfy the retailer's return policy. According to Affirm merchant docs, Affirm and Afterpay cannot cancel the loan or refund until the merchant confirms the return in the Affirm merchant refund guide. Bring a gift receipt when you have one.

Keep tracking proof for a mailed return. Expect the buyer to take part, since the credit path runs through the buyer.

  • Confirm the store window, condition rules, and receipt needs.
  • Return to the store or ship back as the store directs.
  • Save the receipt and tracking number.

Record the return in the lender app

Afterpay directs the buyer to start with the retailer, then tap Return order in the app. According to Afterpay Help, it moves the next payment while processing, then adjusts or cancels remaining payments once the merchant confirms in the Afterpay refunds and returns guide. Klarna asks shoppers to follow store instructions plus tap Report a return in the Klarna app with tracking details.

According to Klarna Customer Service, if the store gives store credit such as a gift card instead of a refund, Klarna installments remain due in the Klarna returns guide.

Who receives the refund?

The recipient often does not receive cash to a personal card. Items marked as gifts and shipped directly to the recipient yield gift credit, while unmarked gifts or gifts first shipped to the giver refund to the original purchaser. That route can reveal the return to the giver.

If discretion matters, talk with the giver before starting the return. A direct exchange at the store may fit better than a mailed refund.

When and how does the credit arrive?

Afterpay sends money owed back to the card or cards used for payments, with arrival up to 10 business days depending on the bank. Affirm credits payments already made, up to the refund amount, to the original payment method within 3–10 business days, but only if the merchant processes the refund within 120 days of purchase and without refunding already-paid interest. The May 22, 2024 interpretive rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau treats buy now, pay later lenders as credit-card providers.

According to the agency, the rule requires dispute investigation, pausing payment during investigation, and refunds for returned products or cancelled services in the CFPB buy now, pay later action. The buyer should keep paying on schedule until the credit appears. That step lowers the risk of a late fee during processing.
