How to Request a Shipping Refund for a Late Package?

See who must file, what proof to save, and the 15-day and 30-day windows for late-package shipping refunds.

To request a shipping refund for a late package, have the sender or payer file a claim before the deadline. You must first show tracking missed the carrier's promised delivery date and time. The committed delivery date is the exact date and time printed on the receipt, label, or online tracking.

Only a missed commitment can qualify for a refund of shipping charges. Filing windows are short, so check tracking right away.

Was the package actually late?

Compare the full tracking history to the committed date and time. A package that arrives after a plain estimate does not qualify. You need a missed promise stated by the carrier.

Save the receipt, label information, invoice, and delivery timestamps. These records prove when the carrier promised delivery and when it arrived. Missing proof often delays or blocks a claim.

How do you file a FedEx late-delivery claim?

The shipper or U.S. payor must actively request a refund or credit. Requests go through FedEx Billing Online, the invoice-adjustment feature, or customer service, according to FedEx in its FedEx money-back guarantee terms.

File within 15 calendar days of the invoice date. If you paid by card or cash in advance, count from the ship date instead. Late requests lose eligibility even when the delay was clear.

How do you file a UPS late-delivery claim?

Notify UPS in writing or by telephone within 15 days of the scheduled delivery date. Include the receiver name and address, shipment date, weight, and tracking number, according to UPS in its UPS service guarantee terms. Keep your notice direct and complete.

An incomplete notice can slow review. Keep a copy with the date you contacted UPS.

How does USPS handle a late package?

For USPS, only Priority Mail Express carries a domestic money-back delivery guarantee. Other mail products do not carry the same postage-refund promise for lateness, according to USPS in its USPS refund help page. The sender requests postage refund online with a free USPS.com account through Help > Request a Refund.

In-person requests need tracking and receipt. File 2-30 days after mailing, or 30-60 days if extra services were bought.

What limits and proof should you expect?

Coverage is narrow. FedEx states its guarantee was reinstated Feb. 12, 2026 for listed U.S.

domestic and international express services while other FedEx services remain suspended. UPS limits its promise to select premium air services, so standard Ground and many 2-Day and 3-Day products are excluded. Delays outside carrier control are also excluded.

That includes severe weather, natural disaster, strike, customs or regulatory hold, incorrect address, recipient refusal or unavailability, and noncompliance with service restrictions. Refunds cover only transportation or postage charges, not item value or later losses.
