How to Politely Exchange a Gift You Don't Want

Thank warmly, exchange quietly, and use store return windows to get what you will actually use.

Thank the giver warmly in the moment and handle any exchange privately later. Send a prompt thank-you note that never mentions dissatisfaction or return plans. An exchange usually means returning the item for credit and then choosing a replacement.

Keeping tags, packaging, and any gift receipt makes that second step faster.

What to say in the moment

The Emily Post Institute recommends a warm thank-you in the moment and complete privacy afterward. It also says thank-you notes should stay prompt and never mention a return or disappointment, as explained in its thank-you guidance. Try a simple line like, "Thank you for thinking of me." Focus on the giver's thought, not fit or color.

Save size notes for later. Send the note within a few days. Start the exchange only after the thank-you is sent.

How do store exchanges work?

At Target, most unopened items in new condition can be returned or exchanged within 90 days. Target Help notes receipt-free returns may be limited or denied and sets shorter windows for electronics, described on its returns page. Target Help treats personalized items, digital downloads, prepaid and Target GiftCards, and some collectibles as final-sale.

Bring what the desk will ask for. Act quickly so you stay inside the window. If the exact color is gone, accept credit and watch for restock.

Do not wear or wash the item first.

  • Keep tags and packaging unopened when possible.
  • Bring the gift receipt and your photo ID.
  • Ask for store credit if you lack a receipt.

What if the gift came from Amazon?

According to Amazon Customer Service, gift items cannot be exchanged directly for a different size or color, as stated in its gift-exchange help page. That means recipients must return the original and place a new order for the wanted item. Choose your replacement size and color before you start the return.

That avoids a second return. Keep the box until the refund posts.

What if you will not use a gift card?

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation notes card funds cannot expire for at least five years after activation, explained in its gift-card guidance. Dormancy fees are allowed only after one year of inactivity, so an unwanted card can be saved rather than rushed. Set the card aside with its terms.

Use it later for everyday goods. Spend it on printer paper, pantry goods, or fuel.
