How to Get a Free Trial of Cloud Gaming This Holiday

Try cloud gaming free this holiday with GeForce NOW, Xbox free-to-play streaming and Luna through a Prime trial.

Cloud gaming lets you play video games streamed over the internet with no download or console needed. You can try it free this holiday with NVIDIA's permanent Free GeForce NOW membership, Xbox free-to-play cloud streaming with a free Microsoft account, and Luna Standard through a 30-day Prime trial. Each option uses a different game library and account.

Your best starting point depends on games you already own and devices you already use.

How does GeForce NOW Free work?

NVIDIA maintains a Free GeForce NOW membership that requires no payment method. NVIDIA notes in its GeForce NOW FAQ that the plan streams games you already own or free-to-play titles from PC stores. That makes it useful for testing a laptop, tablet, or TV box before paying for a plan.

You still need accounts and licenses for the PC stores and games you want to stream.

How can you stream Xbox games without Game Pass?

Microsoft lets people with a free Microsoft account stream select free-to-play titles with no Game Pass subscription. Microsoft says on its Xbox cloud gaming page that supported-region players can stream titles such as Fortnite. This path fits holiday users who want quick access on a browser, phone, or TV.

It does not open the full Game Pass catalog, so check that the game you want is marked as cloud-playable free-to-play.

How does the Prime trial unlock Luna?

New Amazon members can start a 30-day Prime free trial with a valid card. Amazon explains in its Prime trial help page that the trial includes full Prime benefits before it converts to paid service at $14.99 per month unless canceled. Prime includes Luna Standard at no extra cost.

About Amazon reports in its Luna overview that Prime members get access to more than 60 streamable games plus GameNight titles, including through the Fire TV Prime Video Games tab.

What should you check before you start?

Starting with one service keeps logins and game licenses simple. Keep your store receipts and account emails until the holiday travel period ends.

  • Account: have a free Microsoft account for Xbox, NVIDIA and PC store accounts for GeForce NOW, or an Amazon account with a valid card for the Prime trial.
  • Location and device: confirm your region supports the service and your device supports its app or browser play.
  • Library: list one or two games you want first, then confirm each one is included in that service.
  • Cost cutoff: set a reminder to cancel the Prime trial before day 30 if you do not want the paid monthly charge.
