How to Find Free Parking at the Airport This Holiday Season

Save on holiday pickups with free airport waiting lots and evening grace periods that cover short stays.

You find free parking at the airport this holiday season by waiting in a free cell-phone lot and using short free grace periods in airport garages. Those options cover pickups and drop-offs, not multi-day stays. A cell-phone waiting lot is a free lot where a driver waits in the car until an arriving passenger calls.

Many airports also allow a short free stay in a garage for quick holiday trips inside.

Wait free in a cell-phone lot

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport provides three free 24-hour waiting lots for drivers meeting arriving passengers, with flight displays in the East and West lots. You stay with your car and leave when your party is ready. Houston Airports guide lists two free lots for George Bush Airport open around the clock near the terminals.

One lot serves Terminals A-C at 17010 JFK Blvd., and the other serves D-E at 5021 Will Clayton Pkwy.

When does an evening grace period help?

The Port of Seattle notes a 90-minute evening grace period in General Parking from 7 p.m. to midnight during Nov. 24-30 and Dec.

22-28. That window fits holiday pickups and drop-offs after daytime traffic peaks. Arrive during the covered hours and keep the visit short.

After 90 minutes, normal parking charges apply for the extra time.

Use a short garage window for quick trips

Tampa International Airport offers the first hour free in the Short Term Garage above the terminal, according to the Tampa International Airport parking page. The same page lists $8 per hour after that, up to $32 per 24 hours. That structure works for meeting a traveler at baggage claim or helping with bags.

For a longer wait, return to a free waiting lot and enter the garage only for loading.

Stay within the pickup rules

Free waiting lots cover short active pickups. They do not replace paid parking for a trip lasting several days. At Houston, the Houston Airports guide says drivers should pull to the arrivals curb only when the traveler is ready.

Drivers must stay with the car or face ticketing or towing.

  • Wait in the cell-phone lot until your passenger lands and has bags
  • Ask your passenger to call when ready at the curb
  • Drive to arrivals, load quickly, and leave
  • Use a garage grace period only for a short trip inside
