How to Enter Gift Card Giveaways in Stockton, California Without Scams

A Stockton checklist for verifying giveaway rules, avoiding payment traps, protecting data, and responding to card loss.
Enter gift card giveaways in Stockton only through a sponsor's verified page, after reading the complete rules. Never pay, buy gift cards, or share card details to enter or collect a prize. A Stockton label does not prove that a promotion is legitimate.
Confirm the sponsor, prize, eligibility, entry method, opening and closing dates, and no-purchase entry route before submitting information.

Verify the sponsor and rules
Find the sponsor's website or customer-service contact independently. Do not rely on a link or phone number in an unexpected prize text, email, or social-media message, because impostors may copy recognizable company names or mention local stores. The FTC recommends contacting the purported sponsor through details you locate yourself.
Read the official rules and check for: If the rules are missing, incomplete, or inconsistent with the advertisement, do not enter until the sponsor resolves the discrepancy.
- The sponsor's legal name and contact information
- The exact gift card offered
- Who may enter, including any location or age restrictions
- The entry period and permitted entry methods
- The winner-selection and notification process
Enter without tying entry to a purchase
Use the free entry method stated in the rules. A sweepstakes offers a chance to win; entering does not create a guaranteed benefit. Keep purchases separate from the entry decision.
Recognize payment and gift-card traps
Do not pay "taxes," shipping, processing charges, or other fees to receive a purported prize. The California Attorney General says legitimate sweepstakes are free and determined by chance, and requests for payment are warning signs. Stop communicating if someone tells you to: Card numbers and PINs allow another person to drain the balance.
A real giveaway entry does not require access to a gift card you already own.
- Purchase gift cards to claim a prize
- Send a card number, PIN, or photograph
- Pay to increase your odds
- Deposit money for later reimbursement
- Act before you can inspect the rules
Distinguish a giveaway from a raffle
A free, chance-based sweepstakes differs from a raffle. In California, a paid chance drawing is a raffle and is legal only when a qualifying charitable organization registered with the Attorney General conducts it and uses at least 90% of gross receipts for charitable purposes. Before paying for a local drawing, identify the charitable organization and verify that the arrangement matches those conditions.
A business calling a paid drawing a "giveaway" does not remove the need for that check.
Decide how much personal information to share
Provide only the information required by the entry form and rules. Read the privacy terms first, because the FTC warns that legitimate promoters may sell entrant information, which can lead to advertising, promotional mail, telemarketing calls, and spam. An entry form may need contact information so the sponsor can reach a potential winner.
It should not need an existing gift card's PIN or a payment simply to record an entry.
Act quickly after sharing card details
If you already disclosed a gift card number or PIN, contact the card issuer immediately. Keep the card and receipt, request a refund, and submit a report through ReportFraud.ftc.gov, following the FTC's gift-card response guidance.
