Use sponsor-controlled entry details, avoid prize fees and sensitive-data requests, and find Cincinnati-area help through 211.

Enter Cincinnati back-to-school giveaways only through the real sponsor's website or contact details you find yourself. Never pay a fee or share financial or sensitive personal information to claim a prize. A legitimate sweepstakes is free to enter and awards prizes by chance.

A community supply distribution may be free help, but it is not the same as a sweepstakes entry.

Start with the sponsor

Find the organizer's website independently instead of relying on a link, phone number, or email in a social post or message. The FTC warns that prize scammers can copy familiar company names while supplying their own contact details. FTC Consumer Advice on prize scams Look for clear promotion details before entering.

For a prize-promotion call, the FTC says the caller must disclose free entry, the prize and value, the odds of winning, and how to redeem it.

Keep entry free

Do not pay "tax," shipping, processing, or any other charge to receive school supplies or a prize. A request to buy something to improve your odds is also a warning sign: legitimate sweepstakes have free entry. FTC Consumer Advice explains these prize-claim warning signs Treat a purchase-based offer differently from a giveaway.

A store may run a promotion with purchase terms, but that does not make payment an acceptable condition for claiming a sweepstakes prize.

Protect the information a prize claim does not need

Do not provide a bank-account number, credit-card number, or Social Security number to claim a back-to-school prize. The FTC says legitimate prize claims do not need that financial or sensitive data. Be especially careful with an unexpected call or message saying that you won a contest you do not remember entering.

Use past local events as timing clues, not entry links

Cincinnati Parks listed a free backpack-and-school-supply event at Ezzard Charles Park on August 15, 2026, with supplies provided by Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses. That event date has passed. United Way of Greater Cincinnati reported that its 2026 Backpacks for Success project distributed backpacks and supplies to more than 4,000 students during August community events.

Those completed distributions show why dates matter when evaluating a post or shared link.
