How to Convert Airline Miles to Gift Cards for the Holidays

Trade airline miles for store cards through member portals and check issuer terms before holiday gifting.

Log in to your airline loyalty account, open its miles redemption portal and choose a gift card brand and dollar amount. A gift-card redemption means trading miles for a store card instead of a flight. That option fits holiday shoppers with miles but no travel plans.

American, Southwest and Delta each let members use miles for cards and other non-flight items.

Which airlines offer miles for gift cards

American Airlines opened gift-card redemptions to AAdvantage members on March 12, 2026. Members can redeem miles for $10 to $500 cards from Sephora, Nike and others across retail, dining and entertainment, according to American Airlines Newsroom in the gift-card launch announcement. Southwest Rapid Rewards members can redeem points for flights plus gift cards, merchandise, hotel stays, rental cars and cardmember experiences through Southwest More Rewards, according to Southwest Airlines in the Rapid Rewards program page.

Delta SkyMiles members can use miles for gift cards, electronics, apparel, show and sporting-event tickets, and experiences through the SkyMiles Marketplace under Use Miles, according to Delta Air Lines in the Use Miles page.

How do you redeem in time for the holidays

Start inside your loyalty account, not a search engine. Check your mile balance, then open the gift-card or rewards section and select brand and denomination. Mail delivery can take longer in December.

Email delivery still depends on the merchant and the program queue.

  • Confirm the account is in your name and has enough miles
  • Choose the merchant, card value and recipient details
  • Check whether the card is sent by mail or email
  • Order early enough for holiday arrival and issuer processing

What limits should you expect

Airline miles generally cannot be cashed out. Southwest says More Rewards gift cards remain subject to the issuer Terms and Conditions, according to Southwest Airlines Support in the More Rewards help article. Those issuer terms control returns, expirations and holiday delivery options.

Read the card terms before you redeem, especially for dining and entertainment brands with location rules.

How should you pick a card amount

Match the card to a clear gift need. American's $10 to $500 range supports small stocking stuffers and larger family gifts. Small balances work for a $10 or $25 card.

Larger balances can cover several cards across retail, dining and entertainment. Redeem only what you need, since returned cards follow merchant rules.
