How to Combine a Return Credit With a New Year Sale

Apply return credit during sale checkout, pay any remainder by card, and know how refunds return to credit first.
Apply your return credit as payment when you check out for a New Year sale item, and the sale price still applies. A return credit means store-credit value or gift-card funds issued after a return, not cash back to your card. Check the credit type before the sale starts.
Some credits need a code at checkout, while others apply by themselves, and refund rules decide where the money goes if you return again.

Can you use credit and sale prices together?
Yes. Avocado says store-credit refunds can be used in addition to any sales or discounts running at that time using store credit with sales. You enter the credit during checkout, and it pays toward the already reduced sale total.
Amazon says redeemed gift-card funds are stored in the account and automatically apply to the next eligible order how gift-card funds apply to orders. That automatic use covers sale-priced eligible goods the same as full-price goods. This matters when credit comes from an earlier return.
You do not have to wait until after the sale or buy at full price to use it.
Should you choose store credit for a return?
It depends on timing and flexibility. Avocado adds 10% to the refund when a customer chooses store credit instead of an original-payment refund, calculated on the original price minus discounts applied at purchase. That extra value helps if you already plan another purchase from the same store.
The trade is commitment. Avocado store credit expires after one year, is emailed within 24-48 hours, and cannot be reversed to an original-payment refund once issued. Request it early enough that the email arrives before the sale item sells out.
What if credit covers only part of the sale total?
Pay the rest with another method in the same checkout. Amazon says if the order total exceeds the gift-card balance, the remaining balance can be paid by credit card or cash. That split payment lets return credit cover part of a New Year purchase.
Use these steps at checkout: Check the final split before you place the order. The receipt should show credit applied plus the second payment for the rest.
- Add the sale item and start checkout to see the reduced total.
- Apply the store credit or confirm the gift-card balance applies.
- Pay the remaining amount with a card or accepted cash option.
What happens if you return the sale purchase?
Refund path follows how you paid. Purchases split between store credit and a card are refunded to store-credit balance first, with any remainder returned to the card. Items bought entirely with store credit are refunded only as store credit.
For games, there is a separate path. Valve says requesting a refund for a title bought just before a sale and immediately rebuying it at the sale price is not considered refund abuse Steam refund rules for sale rebuys. It still requires an approved refund plus a separate lower-price purchase.
Keep the credit email and the second receipt until any refund posts, because a second return may land as credit again.
