How to Claim Free Trial Subscriptions Without Forgetting to Cancel

Mark each trial deadline at signup and cancel in the same app store or site before it renews.
Claim a free trial with a payment method you check often, then set a calendar alert for two days before it ends. Cancel where you were billed before that alert passes. A free trial subscription is a negative-option plan.
The trial turns into paid billing unless you cancel. A short setup routine keeps the savings without the renewal charge.

What must a trial disclose before you pay?
Federal law described by the FTC requires online sellers to show all material trial terms before taking billing information. Sellers must get express informed consent before charging and offer a simple way to stop recurring charges. That protection covers U.S.
online trial users. An FTC expansion that would have required cancellation as easy as signup was vacated in full on July 8, 2025, according to analysis by Foley and Lardner. No federal same-medium cancel rule is now in force while new rulemaking continues.
Check the seller terms yourself and save proof of the trial length and cancel path.
How do you set up a trial so you remember it?
Start the trial only when you can use it right away. Use one email and one card for trials so renewals are easy to spot. The FTC advises in its consumer guide to trials and auto-renewals marking the deadline on a calendar right after signup.
- Write down the trial end date, first charge date, and cancel link.
- Set two alerts, one week before and two days before renewal.
- Turn off auto-renew in the account right after signup when allowed.
- Save the signup screen and confirmation email.
Where do you cancel an online trial?
Cancel where the subscription is billed, not only in the seller app. California law strengthened by AB 2863 effective July 1, 2025 requires a customer who enrolled online to be able to cancel online without obstruction or delay, according to the California Attorney General consumer alert. For Google Play trials, Google Play Help explains in its trial billing help page users get an email before the trial ends and are charged at trial end unless they cancel first.
For iPhone App Store trials, Apple explains in its iPhone subscriptions guide subscriptions are managed at Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, then Cancel Subscription. Keep the cancellation confirmation until the statement shows no charge.
What if cancellation is blocked or you missed the date?
Act fast and keep records. Take screenshots of error messages, chat denials, and missing cancel buttons. Contact the seller through another channel and ask for written confirmation.
The CFPB states consumers may revoke automatic-payment authorization by telling the company first, then calling and writing the bank or credit union. The same agency warns revoking bank debits does not cancel the service contract or amount owed. The FTC also advises asking the card company to stop payments when the seller blocks cancellation, with written billing-error notice generally within 60 calendar days after the statement showing the charge.
Complete the seller cancellation too to avoid fees or collections.
