How to Check if a Cashback Portal Excludes Gift Card Purchases

Check store terms for gift-card exclusions before you click through to avoid missing a reward.

Open the store page on your cashback portal and read the terms for gift-card language before you click through. If the terms list gift cards as excluded, expect no reward for that purchase. A cashback portal is a shopping site that pays members a reward for starting a store visit through its link.

Most portals treat gift cards as a separate category with different rules from regular merchandise.

Where to find the exclusion

Check the store-specific terms on the activation page before you buy. Rakuten instructs shoppers to open the "See all Terms & Exclusions" link on the Cash Back activation page to review store rules, as described in why Cash Back may not appear. Do not rely on the headline rate.

A store may advertise a percentage back but still list gift cards, prior purchases, or certain departments as ineligible in the fine print. Read that block for the retailer you plan to use.

  • Open the portal, search the store name, and stay on the activation page.
  • Select terms, exclusions, or details for that store.
  • Search the text for "gift card," "gift certificate," and "redemption."

Buying cards versus paying with cards

Many portals exclude both actions: buying a gift card and paying for an order with one. Rakuten states most gift-card purchases are excluded from Cash Back, and some stores also exclude orders paid for with gift cards, according to why Cash Back may not appear. Mr.

Rebates states the same two-part rule for its members: gift-card and e-gift-card purchases are ineligible, and full or partial payment by gift-card or gift-certificate redemption is also ineligible, as explained in Mr. Rebates help on ineligible purchases. That distinction matters at checkout.

Even if the item in your cart normally earns a reward, paying with a gift card can remove eligibility. Split payment can have the same effect when any part uses a gift card.

Why rules vary by retailer

Exclusions are set per retailer, so check each store separately. TopCashback's HelloFresh terms state Cash Back is not eligible on gift-card purchases or redemptions, which shows the check is per-retailer terms, as shown in TopCashback HelloFresh store terms. Other stores list additional excluded categories beside gift cards.

TopCashback's Apple Store terms exclude gift cards, gift wrap and listed Apple hardware, plus purchase or redemption of an Apple Store gift card, as shown in TopCashback Apple Store terms. Use the retailer name plus the portal terms as your decision point. If one store allows an exception, do not assume the next store allows it.

Limited exceptions and safer steps

A narrow exception can exist on a dedicated gift-card page. Rakuten preserves that path: select gift cards can earn Cash Back through its dedicated gift-card shopping page. Treat that path as the only exception unless the store terms say otherwise.

Start from the gift-card page named in the terms, not from a general merchant page or search result. If you plan a large purchase, keep the receipt and order confirmation until the reward tracks. Place gift-card orders separately from merchandise you want to earn on, and pay for reward-eligible orders with a debit or credit card when the terms require it.
