How To Check A Gift Card Balance Before You Regift It

Learn how to confirm a gift card amount, spot tampering, and avoid copycat checkers before you pass it on.

Check the balance through the retailer's own website, app, or phone number on the card before you regift it. Enter the card number and PIN or access code only there, then confirm the amount left. Regift means passing an unused gift card you received to someone else.

A quick check prevents an awkward zero-balance gift. It also lets you catch damage, fees, or tampering while you can still act.

Check with the retailer that issued the card

According to Target Help, Target holders can check online with the 15-digit card number plus Access Number under the silver strip, by phone, or in the app under Gift cards, as explained in Target's gift-card balance help. The phone option at 1-800-544-2943 also gives the last five transactions. According to Amazon Customer Service, Amazon holders sign into Your Account and select Gift cards to see the remaining value, as described in Amazon's gift-card balance help.

That balance page also shows changes with order IDs or serial numbers. Starbucks says card holders can manage value in participating stores, at starbucks.com/gift, at 1-800-STARBUC, or in the app. Each purchase receipt states the remaining balance, which helps track small spends.

What do you need to check?

Have the card number and PIN or access code ready. For many plastic cards, the code sits under a silver scratch strip. Scratch gently and enter it only on the retailer's own page.

Do not send photos of the front and back to confirm value. Anyone with both numbers can spend the funds. Write down the confirmed amount separately for the new recipient.

  • PIN, Access Number, or access code

Read dates and fees before you wrap it

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, federal rules bar inactivity or service fees during the first 12 months and bar sale of a card expiring in under five years, as outlined in federal gift-card protections. Those limits affect most retail gift cards. If you find an expiration date, call the number on the card.

Ask about recovering unexpired funds, including a free replacement. Keep the card until the new recipient confirms the transfer.

Inspect the card and packaging

Target Security and Fraud advises inspecting physical packaging for torn edges, excess glue residue, or stretched holograms and stickers. Do not buy or give a card with altered packaging without asking store staff. Check that the scratch strip looks untouched before you reveal it.

Look for bent corners, resealed sleeves, or mismatched barcodes. Choose a different card if anything looks altered.

Avoid copycat balance checkers

Fake balance-check sites copy retailer logos, buy search ads, request the card number plus PIN, then drain funds and may redirect to the real retailer site to hide theft, according to Bitdefender reporting from Nov. 4, 2026, in this gift-card checker warning. That risk affects anyone using an unfamiliar link.

Both Target Security and Fraud and Bitdefender advise checking only on the retailer's own site or app or the phone number printed on the card. Never use a third-party checker from search results or messages. Anyone who entered details on a suspicious site should contact the issuer immediately and report fraud.
