How to Avoid Holiday Shipping Surcharges?

Ship before late September, right-size each box, and choose pickup points to avoid peak delivery fees.
Ship before late-September peak windows open, send packages to a carrier pickup location, and pack in the smallest protective box. Those three moves avoid most demand fees, residential add-ons, and oversize penalties. A demand surcharge is a temporary per-package fee carriers add during peak season to cover extra handling.
The U.S. Postal Service announced a temporary holiday price increase for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select from Oct. 5, 2025 to Jan.
18, 2026 to cover extra handling costs, as described in the USPS holiday price announcement.

When do peak fees apply?
UPS charged demand surcharges from Sept. 28, 2025 through Jan. 17, 2026.
FedEx charged parallel demand surcharges from Sept. 29, 2025 through Jan. 18, 2026.
Rates were highest during Thanksgiving-to-Christmas weeks. Shipping before late September avoids those fees entirely for that season. The 2025 dates matter because they show the pattern.
Peak pricing starts before October and lingers past Christmas returns.
How much can surcharges add?
USPS holiday surcharges averaged about 5.1% for Ground Advantage and 4.1% for Priority Mail. That added roughly $0.30 to $16.00 per package by weight and zone. UPS charged $0.40 to $2.05 per Ground Residential, Air and Ground Saver package.
Qualifying high-volume shippers paid up to $8.75 per package. Handling penalties rose sharply in the core window. UPS lists Additional Handling at about $8.25 rising to $10.80 and Large Package at about $90.50 rising to $107.00 from Nov.
23 to Dec. 27, 2025 in the UPS peak surcharge schedule.
Why does shipping early save more than the surcharge?
Carriers set economy ground Christmas cutoffs around Dec. 15. Express cutoffs fell around Dec.
19-23 in 2025. After those dates, ground service may not arrive by Christmas. Shoppers must then pay for air or express upgrades.
Early shipping also lowers other risks. It avoids Saturday pickup fees and leaves buffer for weather delays.
How do box size and delivery address change the price?
UPS and FedEx price parcels by dimensional weight. The formula is length times width times height divided by 139. Fractional inches round up since Aug.
2025. Right-sizing to the smallest protective box lowers billable weight. Delivery address matters too.
UPS charged about $6.50 and FedEx about $6.45 per home delivery as a residential surcharge in 2026, while USPS charged none. Ground packages sent to carrier pickup locations count as commercial and skip residential plus residential demand fees.
- Measure the item, then choose the smallest box that allows padding.
- Remove retailer over-boxing before repacking gifts for shipment.
- Compare USPS Ground Advantage for small residential parcels.
- Select a pickup location at checkout when the recipient can collect quickly.
