How to Avoid Giving Tuesday Donation Processing Fees

Learn which checkout buttons, bank transfer, and mail-in options keep more of your gift with charity.

You can avoid GivingTuesday donation processing fees by picking a no-fee giving path, paying by bank transfer where offered, or mailing a check. Those options remove the card charge or replace it with a much smaller bank cost. GivingTuesday is the annual day when many nonprofits run online fundraisers.

Most card gifts lose a small slice to payment processing. Your choice at checkout decides whether that slice applies.

Why do fees appear at checkout?

Card processing cannot drop to zero. Lite Raise reports that Stripe lists a standard 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction, with its fee breakdown noting a discounted 2.2% plus $0.30 for eligible U.S. 501(c)(3) groups that apply.

That per-gift cost comes out before the nonprofit receives the funds. Many pages ask you to cover it. BetterWorld Help Center says donors may add about $3 on a $100 card gift so the nonprofit still nets $100, and reports over 95% of donors cover it.

Network for Good GivingTuesday pages disclose a 3% transaction fee for card, bank and processing costs and ask donors to add 3%.

Which checkout choices carry no fee?

Some platforms remove the processing charge from the gift. Zeffy states it charges nonprofits no platform, transaction, processing or subscription fee and absorbs card costs, as explained in its no-fee explanation. It is funded instead by an optional donor tip at checkout that donors may lower or set to zero.

PayPal gives another no-fee path for the right entry point. PayPal says donations made in the PayPal app or on PayPal's giving site through PayPal Giving Fund carry no fees because PayPal covers all transaction costs, according to its giving page. Use that app or giving site rather than a standard checkout button.

Can bank payments and checks lower costs?

Bank ACH transfers cost much less than cards. Stripe's ACH guide lists 0.80% capped at $5, so a $100 gift incurs about $0.80 and any payment above $625 costs $5. Look for ACH or bank transfer where the donation form offers it.

Mailing a physical check incurs no online payment-processing or platform fee because no online processing occurs. Givebutter Help Center points to checks or other offline gifts as the most direct way to avoid online fees.

  • Look for a mail-in or offline gift option on the fundraiser page.
  • Use the exact payee name and mailing address shown.
  • Keep your mailing receipt for your records.

What limits should you check first?

Lower-fee routes are restricted. BetterWorld Help Center notes ACH on fundraising platforms generally requires a verified nonprofit and U.S. donors.

If you give from outside the United States, card or another listed method may be the only choice. Other charges can still apply in some flows. The same BetterWorld Help Center notes PayPal Giving Fund partner-platform fees and currency-conversion fees can still apply.

Read the fee note on the checkout page before you pay.
