How to Avoid Customs Delays on International Holiday Gifts?

Ship holiday gifts without delay by writing clear forms, checking limits, and warning recipients about fees.
Prevent delays by giving each gift a specific customs description and securing the declaration to the outside of the parcel. Check the destination gift allowance and banned-item list before you pack, and tell the recipient that any tax may need payment on delivery. A customs declaration is the attached label that tells officers what is inside, its value, and whether it is a gift.
Rules differ by country and value counts. U.S. CBP notes that duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value imports valued at $800 or less was suspended after Executive Order 14324 effective Aug.
29, 2025, so small parcels face more consistent duty checks.

Write a specific description for every item
USPS requires every item in outbound international packages to have a specific customs description, including small personal gifts and military mail. USPS warns that vague entries can cause return or refusal. U.S.
CBP states that the declaration must fully and accurately describe the merchandise and be securely attached to the outside, as explained in CBP guidance on internet purchases. Keep the form visible and protected from rain and handling. Use plain, countable wording on each line:
- wool scarf, red, for adult — 1, $35 value, gift
- wooden toy train set — 1, $28 value, gift
- chocolate box, milk assortment — 1, 250 grams, gift
What fits the United States gift allowance?
Gifts worth up to $100 can enter duty- and tax-free when sent to friends and relatives in the United States, if one person does not receive more than $100 in gifts in a single day. U.S. CBP sets the limit at $200 for gifts sent from Guam, American Samoa, or the U.S.
Virgin Islands, according to CBP rules for gifts sent from abroad. Split larger holiday plans into separate mailing days when several gifts go to the same person. Mark the parcel as a gift and list each item value so officers can apply the allowance.
How do gift limits work in the United Kingdom and Ireland?
The United Kingdom exempts occasional private gifts worth £39 or less from import VAT, charges VAT above £39, and adds customs duty when goods exceed £135. GOV.UK explains these thresholds and notes that the carrier takes goods through customs and tells the recipient if payment is due, as described in GOV.UK guidance on goods sent from abroad. Ireland applies EU rules that give duty and VAT relief for occasional private gifts from outside the EU only when intrinsic goods value is €45 or less, excluding postage and insurance.
Irish Revenue sets that €45 goods-only test in Revenue rules for gift consignments. Unpaid VAT or duty can hold a parcel until the recipient pays. Tell the recipient the declared value and possible charge before you mail.
Why check prohibitions and warn your recipient?
Some holiday items cannot travel by mail at all. USPS country conditions for the United Kingdom specifically prohibit Christmas crackers, so check destination prohibitions and carrier restrictions before packing. A quick check takes minutes and prevents a return.
Search the carrier country list for the exact item name, read food, plant, alcohol, and tobacco notes, and remove anything flagged. Send early, keep the receipt and tracking number, and message the recipient that a tax notice may arrive by text, email, or delivery card. Ask them to watch for that notice and pay promptly so the gift releases without extra storage time.
