How to Ask for an Item in a Buy Nothing Group

Use a clear Ask, personal context, and a realistic pickup window to request Buy Nothing items respectfully.
Create an Ask post and clearly name the item you hope a neighbor can give you. Add the condition, size or dimensions, and pickup times that would work, as recommended by the Buy Nothing Project's posting guide. A Buy Nothing group is a gift-economy community where members give goods, time, and help without payment or trade.
You may also comment on an existing Give post and ask the giver to consider you.

What to include in an Ask
Start with a specific description. "Ask: Small kitchen table" is more useful than "Looking for furniture" because neighbors can quickly tell whether they have a possible match. Mention details that affect whether the item will work for you: Photos are optional, but the Buy Nothing Project says they generally attract more interest.
You might post a picture of the space an item must fit, the missing part you need, or a similar item for reference.
- Approximate size or dimensions
- Acceptable condition
- Important features, such as color or material
- Whether you can pick it up
- Your preferred pickup days or times
Add helpful personal context
Explain briefly why the item would help. A warm, specific note gives neighbors more information than a one-word response and supports the community's connection-focused approach. For example: "I'm looking for a working desk lamp for my child's homework area.
Any color is fine, and I can pick up Tuesday evening or Saturday morning." Keep the explanation proportionate to the request. You do not need to disclose private financial, medical, or family information. A sentence about the item's intended use is often enough to make the request clear and personal.
Use a simple request template
A practical Ask can follow this format: "Ask: [specific item]. I'm hoping to use it for [brief purpose]. [Condition, size, or feature] would work well, but I'm flexible about [details that do not matter].
I can pick up [times or days]. Thank you for considering my request." Here is a completed example: "Ask: Twin-size bed frame. I'm setting up a room for a visiting relative.
A basic frame in usable condition would be great; appearance does not matter. I can collect it Wednesday after 6 p.m. or Sunday afternoon." If transportation is a problem, say so before accepting an item.
Givers are not expected to deliver, but the Buy Nothing Project's FAQ says a member may make a separate request for transportation help.
Asking on an existing Give post
When someone has already offered an item, comment to ask for consideration. Include a small amount of relevant context instead of writing only "interested," as advised in the Buy Nothing Project's member how-to. A useful comment might read: "I'd appreciate being considered for this blender.
Mine recently stopped working, and I could pick yours up tomorrow after 5 p.m." An Ask or comment does not reserve the item. Buy Nothing has no first-come, first-served rule; the giver chooses the recipient at their discretion. Avoid pressuring the giver or assuming that the earliest response will be selected.
Know what you may request
Members may ask for freely given items, skills, assistance, or time. The request must be legal locally and comply with the community's rules and the platform's terms. An Ask cannot seek money, a purchase, a rental, a trade, paid work, fundraising support, or a referral for buying a service.
The Buy Nothing Project guidelines distinguish these communities from buy, sell, and trade groups. Suitable requests could include a winter coat, help moving a bookcase, garden advice, or an hour of language practice. "Can anyone sell me a used coat?" or "I'll trade tools for moving help" would not fit the gift-only format.
Confirm pickup promptly
If a giver selects you, reply promptly and agree on a realistic pickup window. Ask for the pickup details you need without posting someone else's private information publicly. Tell the giver as soon as possible if your plans change and offer a new time.
A giver is not expected to hold an item longer than is convenient, so clear communication can prevent the gift from being offered to someone else.
